Few vehicles evoke a lineage of both groundbreaking engineering and refined luxury like the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. The first production Super Leicht (or “Super Lightweight”) cars were only slightly altered from the legendary 300SL racecars which had cemented Mercedes-Benz’s performance image by dominating the 1950s racing circuit. Stunningly quick and with gorgeous lines, the first SLs were technical triumphs, sporting among the first direct fuel-injection systems and advanced “birdcage” design, the latter of which necessitated the first generation’s “gullwing” doors to ease entry to the cockpit.

The introduction of the open-top roadster models, however, made the SL-Class the icon it is today. While stunning in capability, the first closed cars were considered cramped, with the high sills making entering and exiting a chore. The 300SL roadster remedied these issues, and, as the years passed, the SL became progressively more luxurious – though it always maintained its dazzling performance.

The third generation of the SL-Class, chassis code R107, debuted in 1971 and would become one of Mercedes-Benz’s longest-running production series. A marvel of contemporary motoring, the new SL was available with luxuries such as automatic climate control, cruise control, and real wood accents in addition to introducing the V8 to the SL. That 4.5-liter eight-cylinder featured aluminum cylinder heads and Bosch fuel injection and was said to accelerate the elegant two-seater to 60 mph in just nine seconds.

The magnificent 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL roadster featured here is finished in gorgeous Silver Green Metallic with a matching removable hardtop over Pine Green leather. This exquisite 450SL roadster is among the finest examples we’ve had the pleasure of offering in many years. The combination of low miles and incredible original condition makes this the perfect example to add to any premier collection. The investment potential of this iconic motorcar will grow beyond your imagination. We are proud to offer what we believe to be one of the very best 450 SLs to the most demanding collector, investor, or enthusiast who desires to own one of the very best!
