The third generation Pontiac Firebird was introduced in late 1981
by Pontiac alongside its corporate cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro for
the 1982 model year. This generation was the first Firebirds to
feature factory fuel injection, four-speed automatic transmissions,
five-speed manual transmissions, four-cylinder engines, 16-inch
wheels, and hatchback bodies. For the 1986 model year, all
Firebirds received center, high-mounted stop lamps to comply with
Federal legislation. These were placed on top of the back hatch
window. All models also received more modern instrument gauges.
