Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1978 International
Harvester Super Scout (SSII), a three-owner truck with just 62,000
original miles. All SSIIs were fitted with plastic door inserts,
fender flares, plastic grille, roll bar, soft top and doors and the
special stripe kit that you see on this truck. They were introduced
to compete with the Jeep CJ and were campaigned successfully in the
off-road racing circuit in the late 70s. Produced in small numbers
and only for the 1977-79 model years (and with SSII-specific VIN
numbers) they have long been highly sought after by Scout
enthusiasts.
This SSII was sold new in Athens, Georgia, and was used by the
original owner to tow his sailboat to nearby Lake Lanier. The
second owner, a friend of ours, purchased it in the mid 1990s and
drove it home to Alabama where it remained until 2017 when we
brokered the sale to the present Georgia owner.
Body is straight and solid with a very original and rust-free
underside. One quality repaint in the original color (white) some
years ago; correct vinyl graphics were installed in 2017. Interior
was reupholstered in marine-grade tan vinyl under present
ownership. GRC roll bar provides an added measure of safety with
three-point seat belts for both front and rear occupants. The
original AM radio remains in the dash, but a bluetooth stereo is
hidden in the locking center console. All-weather speakers are
mounted to the roll bar. Custom bumpers and a tachometer cleverly
mounted in the transmission cover plate were added in period.
Optioned with a 304 cubic inch V8, four-speed manual, power
steering, power disk (front) brakes and 4wd. Runs and drives
particularly well. Service within the last 3,000 miles includes a
full tune up with electronic ignition, water pump, thermostat and
aluminum radiator, new carburetor, valve cover gaskets and a new
steering linkage. Rare original SSII top and doors are included -
they could use a trip to the upholstery shop as the windows are in
bad shape but the nearly impossible-to-find door frames are in good
condition. This SSII is a great turn-key cruiser and a rare
find.
Owner's manual, original key (on a keychain from the selling
dealer), a handwritten maintenance and mileage log, plus service
