Vehicle Description
1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Hurst/Olds
Hurst Performance was originally named Hurst-Campbell. The company
was established in 1958 as an auto repair shop when George Hurst
and Bill Campbell were both young men. The original shop was
located on Glenside Ave. in Glenside, Pennsylvania. By the early
1960s, Hurst transmission shifters and other products had become
legendary in auto racing, particularly in drag racing, and among
custom car makers. Many automobile enthusiasts replaced flimsy
factory shifters, (and steering column shifters as well), with
Hurst floor shifters to obtain better control of gear selection,
particularly for competitive driving. As automotive historian Mike
Mueller noted, "If you didn't have a Hurst shifter in your
supercar, you were a mild-mannered loser.
For consignment, a pro touring version of the Hurst edition of the
1979 Olds Cutlass Calais. It is one of 2,499 units produced with
the W30 Option. It is presented in gold and black and is a full
hardtop version. The car was purchased from Texas where the body
and frame was fully restored. Our consignor brought an engine to
the table and the rest is history sitting in our Hallowed
Halls.
Due to varying emissions control devices being removed, please

Exterior
Bathed in two tone gold and black this car takes a good paint job
to another level. It uses the gold for the grille and hood top as
well as the roofline to the B pillar. Here black takes over and
also for the front bumper and car'slowers and trunk. A slight
pinstripe makes an appearance in gold on the rear quarter panel and
trunk lid wrapping around to the rear bumper in black. Square and
rectangle steel with well minded gaps is the norm for this
wonderfully restored example. Gold centered 5 spoke Forgeline CF3C
wheels 19x9 in front and 19x12 on back have gloss black edging and
are wrapped in Michelin Sport radial tires. Notable and iconic
Hurst badging is on this vehicle.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we see beautifully restored door panels
which use black molded vinyl and a carbon fiber central accent
poised for the hurst badging, Seen are power window andlock toggles
and a mirror joystick all in chrome. The seats are wrapped in black
leather, and are made by Recaro and present as the Expert M series
version. These are in very nice condition with perfectly aged
leather. In the center is a snappy console with some gold cup
holders, a glovebox and the Winters gated shifter topped with a
Hurst pistol grip handle. Upfront, the dash is standard simple
clean design with sweep black faced instrumentation with white
lettering. It has been upgraded to a digital LED readout flat dash
behind glass. More carbon fiber panels have been added as well as
an Alpine digital screen display killer stereo. A nice leather back
bench is seen and all new black carpeting and headliner are now
installed for that showroom look, albeit customized with the carbon
fiber panels.
Drivetrain
Under that gold painted hood I expected to see Linda Vaughan, but
instead it gets even better, and bigger! OH Yeah! a 532ci V8 based
on aDart Big M Sportsman block, Mahle pistons, Eagle H-beam rods, a
Callies Compstar crank, a Comp Cams hydraulic roller cam
(.617i/.615e lift, 236i/244e duration, 112 lobe separation), and
Morel lifters. It taps out with a whopping 673hp thanks to Air Flow
Research (AFR) #3670 300cc aluminum oval port heads, and it is fed
by Fast EFI with a port matched Edelbrock Victor intake manifold. A
4-speed 4L80E automatic transmission featuring a TCI EZ-TCU
controller is bolted on the back. For the rear axle,it's a Moser 9
inch with a Moser housing, a full floater Currie 3rd member with
3.70 gears, has a Tru-Trac differential and Moser 31 spline axles.
Headers and a glasspack style muffler dual exhaust system are
looking pristine. Plenty of other features and adding too numerous
to mention are available for your perusal if interested, just
ask!
Undercarriage
Underneath this machine is supported by a powder coated Schwartz
Performance G-Machine chassis. It has Schwartz's Performance front
suspension components in the independent coilover arrangement with
tubular control arms and rack and pinion steering. On the back is a
4 link with coilover setup with Schwartz sway bars and Road Tech
coil overs. Wilwood power disc brakes are in front which are a 13"
with 6 pistons and on back are Wilwood 12" discs with 4 pistons.
All power for these brakes so you can slow those horses.
Drive-Ability
I felt like I was in a futuristic rebuild of the Hurst era that
goes like the wind. It has massive acceleration, plenty of ongoing
seemingly limitless power, and great handling. The panic stop was a
real key and it passed with flying colors. All functions were
working perfectly and the LED dash was just a smash! Have a seat
Linda, (Love Love).
With a huge binder of all aspects of this beautiful build and
restoration we have a real winner of a promo car in our midst. It's
near perfection and has the performance to kick someone else's ass
into oblivion, all in mild mannered tasteful gold and black Hurst
edition style. Go for it.
