Porsche Race Team Decals - Black Interior Harkening back to the
days of the Porsche race team using simple VW Type 1 cargo vans to
transport cars and equipment to and from the various race tracks,
we have a Type 2 Kombi, inspired by racing teams of yore. It's
quite a simple idea really, which results in a fun, nostalgic
vehicle. Retro cool styling and the charm of the VW bus create a
fun package with this Kombi. The vehicle you see here is a 1990
Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi finished in bright red over a simple black
and gray interior and showing approximately 85,919 miles on the
mechanical odometer. By 1990, the US market was well into the
Volkswagen Vanagon years as being the Volkswagen van option. The
Vanagon is considered the third generation or T3, by VW
enthusiasts. Mexican consumers on the other hand, were buying a
watercooled version of the Type 2 generation Van, like the one you
see here. This particular van has a bit more of a German feel,
thanks to the bright red color, and the added Porsche Rennfahrer
Team emblazoned on either side. Rennfahrer translates to racer in
German, and interestingly the word Carrera, which we generally
liken to Porsche, is loosely defined as competition or race. While
this van won't be setting any hot laps, it is a great vehicle to
drive to move gear around, or as a fun vehicle to cruise around in.
Guards Red is the first color that comes to many enthusiast's minds
when a red Porsche is mentioned. This Kombi is finished in a shade
that is not too far off Porsche's famous Guards Red. A bright red
Porsche is hard to miss on the road, so a van painted a very
similar shade and shaped like a brick won't be hard to miss either.
The red paint is shiny, with contrast to the red paint coming from
black painted bumpers, black door handles, and black wheels. Black
headlight bezels, black grille, a black sunshade above the
windshield, and a black roof rack are other exterior highlights. As
you might expect from a cargo van, the interior is pretty simple. A
pair gray seats, which look to be the right vintage for this Kombi,
are in nice condition and provide the only seating surface for
passengers. Those who are familiar with both the T2 generation and
T3 generation VW vans will immediately see the elements from both
generations mixed throughout the interior. In addition, a Pioneer
stereo and speakers have been added along with a simple wood
reclined seat in the rear of the van. It could be a great place to
lounge between laps during a day of racing your Porsche at the
track. At the rear of the van is a 1.8 Liter Inline-4 gas engine,
which is the same engine we would have seen in the Mark 2
Generation Golf or Jetta. The gearbox is a 4 speed manual. The
underside, while a little bit dirty, looks to be solid with no
issues to be seen on the floor pans or the underside framing. This
van is an interesting amalgamation of a few generations of VW
Transporter Van generations, as well as a few parts from even more
modern VW small cars. It left the factory that way, and we know
that although it looks a bit different than what we are used to
seeing, it works. We think the concept of the van as a Porsche
Racing Team vehicle tribute, or replica, is clever, and certainly
something that is different. Looking cool amongst a group of
Porsches is right where this unique Kombi belongs. Wunderbar!
