For Sale: 1972 Ford Thunderbird in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

PRICE REDUCED!  Stand out from the typical cruise crowd with this great example not usually seen with this mileage and in this condition.

1972 was the first year of the sixth generation Thunderbird.  This personal luxury coupe was only offered as a 2-door and the only year of this generation that didn't have the added federal impact bumpers.  A big, beautiful, Ford with sofa-like seating, smooth ride, and good power allowed the driver to travel in style.

Our example is an all-original, 22k-mile survivor.  With only 3 owners since new (2 of which were grandfather handing down to grandson), this car has been well-maintained all of its life.

Drivetrain: 429 cid 4V big block mated to a SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic Transmission and 2.75 rear gears.  Fires right up and settles into a smooth, quiet idle.  Cruises effortlessly down the road with no hesitation, smoke, or leaks.

Amenities: Air-conditioning, power steering, power front disc brakes, Stereosonic Tape System with AM Radio & speaker control, lap & shoulder seat belts, Automatic Parking Brake Release.

Interior: Dark red leather & vinyl (code KD) split-bench front seats with no rips or weathering.  Excellent carpeting without rips or stains.  The trunk area has all closeout panels intact and the original liner, jack, and spare tire.

Exterior: 2J Maroon in color with the optional Cayman (Alligator) Grain Vinyl black top.  Beautiful chrome and bright work.  Clear glass and marker lenses all around.

Wheels & Tires: A non-matching brand set of P225/75R15 whitewall tires with plenty of tread.  Factory steel wheels with all matching hubcaps in beautiful condition.

Driving Impression:  Despite its large size, this car is effortless to drive.  The suspension is tight and responsive and it stops strong.  Steering the car could be done with one finger, it's that smooth.  Although not a speed demon, the engine has ample cruising power.  The doors "chunk" when closed with no annoying rattles and the leather seats are soft and luxurious.

"So what's wrong with it?" you ask;

  • Although nice from 10 feet, the exterior paint could use a good buff and wax.
  • The original exhaust piping has 2 small holes.  The buyer would need to have this repaired to pass PA State inspection (this may not be an issue in your state).
  • The black vinyl top is showing early signs of bubbling underneath, along the rear window area.
  • The driver's seat had 1 decorative button fall off but it's still with the car.
  • The hood insulation is torn and missing portions.
  • Radio and speakers work, 8-Track operation is unknown.

In conclusion: This is an extremely nice example of a 1972 Ford Thunderbird that was well-maintained throughout its life.  The owners obviously took pride in keeping the car in very good condition with maintenance and upkeep.  If the big 70's styled cars are your passion, you can't pass on this T-Bird.
