Vehicle Description
1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28
A concept created partially by Roger Penske, the International Race
Of Champions or IROC would pit all star drivers from numerous
venues of racing, against each other in similarly prepared cars.
Except for the first season, those cars were provided by Chevrolet,
and they chose to feature the Camaro.
This IROC version of the 1986 Camaro is in full IROC street garb.
Special painted badging, a low slung windshield, some fairings, and
a powerful 5.0 Liter Tuned Port fuel injection engine were just a
few of the features that were added to this version of the Camaro.
An original 52,403 mile car was purchased after driving past a
dealership on our consignor couple's 25th anniversary, they fell in
love with the car too! One owner since its purchase and a Jeep to
drive in bad weather, it's clean and runs fab.
Exterior
Bright Blue covers the straight steel body panels, fairings and
front built in spoiler on the neoprene front bumper of the car. A
curved glass rear greenhouse deck offering up plenty of storage.
IROC Z badging in gray to black fade is seen on each door, as well
as Z28 tuned port injection badge on the front lower fender. Hood
lovers and contrasting square headlight inset bezels, as well as
fog lights underneath, are in black fields. Polished 16-inch 5
spoke Camaro silver with black mags are attached to all 4 corners.
On the back, a nifty black gridded tail lighting wraps around the
rear quarters and comes to a point on each side. The mid section
has a blue trimming on either side, and some black door handles and
window surrounds are all chip free.
Interior
A snazzy gray and black angled tweed broadcloth bowls you over on
the door panel uppers. On the bottoms is gray carpeting and an
angled molded plastic door pull and armrest delineates the two
surfaces. Inside, front the bucket seat configuration showsplain
gray stitched inserts and more of the angled tweed for the
bolsters. This also holds true for the rear 2 plus 2 seats which
individually fold down for rear compartment access. A black console
and simple design dash house all the critical instrumentation, as
well as climate controls, radio and automatic shift lever. Power
windows are installed. Power locks, power steering, power brakes,
joystick toggle controlled mirrors are working and are great
conveniences with this sports car. The seats are pristine and float
on nice clean gray carpeting with a felted gray headliner which
also includes an upper console for sunglass storage and some extra
lighting.
Drivetrain
The Tuned Port Injection 5.0 Liter V8 gives plenty of smooth 150
horsepower. This is fed with EFI and on back is a 4-speed automatic
transmission, (700R4 model). All this sends galloping ponies to a
10 bolt 3.23 Positraction rear axle. All very clean and well
preserved under this hood.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted on the suspension and driveshaft and
rear pumpkin. The floor pans remain solid, as does the unibody
construction. Rear power drum brakes are on and front power discs
brakes speced for the stopping power. Independent coil spring front
suspension, and a torque arm and coil spring suspension for the
rear is seen. A dual outlet stock exhaust is optioned on.
Drive-Ability
As I sat inside I was harkened back to my mid 1980's memories of
screaming down the highway going to the shore. This car fired right
up and the test track proved all those memories true, a great
cruiser, smooth accelerator, and good handling. The AC blows warm
and the engine temp gauge is broken.
A lovely car, wonderful color scheme, and a good driver. Fairly
clean, spending most of its time in a good warm salt free garage
during the inclement weather. An all original car harkening back to
the days of big hair and bought on an anniversary and enjoyed since
... What a great story!.
