Vehicle Description
1964 Chevrolet Impala Convertible
The 3rd generation Impala ran from 1961-1964 and would end up being
one of the most important American cars to date. These were the
game changing years in which the Super Sport and the world famous
409 engines were released. The SS Impala played an integral role in
formulating what we now know as the original muscle cars.
Here in the corridors of the Classic Auto Mall we have all kinds of
cars with all kinds of purposes. Some classics to be shown, others
to be driven, and others to do both. Here we have a classic 1964
Chevrolet Impala convertible that exemplifies early muscle cars. It
is to be driven and should be shown. Read on!
Exterior
From its chromed bezel dual headlight flanking an egg crate grille
and lower wrap around bumper, to the stainless paperclip style
spear running along the crease at its belt line, and the dual sets
of three taillights within more aluminum trim, and a blue surround,
and lower bumper, this car sports plenty of nice brite-work, and
chrome to feast your eyes on. Wrap around chrome window surrounds,
and block letter "Impala" badging with the galloping Impala in a
circle, and the crossed flags badge on both front quarter panels
shines brightly against its blue paint. This paint is nicely
applied but is not without chips, runs, inclusions and evidence of
prior body work. A black canvas ragtop is on with a glass rear
window and presents with staining, a few small holes and some seam
separation. That aside, the black provides a wonderful contrast to
the large sea of blue on the body. All lines and gaps on this car
are fairly well minded and polished American Racing Torque Thrust
wheels in 17-inch format are wrapped with Ironman rubber from the
39th week of 2019.
Interior
As we swing open the 1 of 2 doors on this drop top we are met with
black vinyl that is buttoned and tuck and roll on the uppers, has
smooth black vinyl outers, tight black tuck and roll lowers below.
Chrome delineating trimmings is on to separate thevarying sections,
as is shiny chrome for the cranks, actuators, and highlighting the
black vinyl padded armrests. I'm just perfectly content here as we
move inside a nice and clean split bench seat, also in black vinyl
framed in chrome is up front, and a matching bench with a central
leaping Impala badged speaker brings up the rear. A very clean
black dash with a padded topper holds original gauges within a
multi-level design. A machined houndstooth pattern aluminum strip
runs across the bottom of the dash and fronting all this a taupe
colored plastic steering wheel in very good condition. Last but not
least, light soiled black carpeting is covering the floors. A shout
out to the orange painted cavernous trunk that holds not only a
parade boot for the top, but also color matched rear fender
skirts.
Drivetrain
A consignor stated original 327ci V8 has been painted GM orange/red
and plenty of polished add ons sits in a detailed engine bay. A
single 4-barrel carb and Edelbrock intake manifold are topped with
a circular chromed air cleaner covering. This engine presents
beautifully with clean wiring and supple hoses. A Powerglide
provides the 2-speed automatic transmission is bolted to the back
and the final drive is 3.36. Blue ribbon also under this hood.
Undercarriage
Power drum brakes are noted on both the front and rear of this
larger than life skate. This all sits within a patinaed and surface
rusted backdrop of flooring, frame and rockers. While the floor
pans, frame and toe kicks remain solid we note invasive rust on the
inner rockers and a few of the body hangers. All sound independent
coil springs are upfront and a 4 link with coil springs is now on
back. A dual exhaust system with headers and Turbo style mufflers
snakes its way past the framing and other mechanicals.
Drive-Ability
A pleasure to get in and turn the key and now hear some quiet but
throaty exhaust. This is a classy classic, that drives like a
dream, handles well for a car its size and brakes well thanks to
the power drums. Two frowns turned up during our time behind the
wheel; the first being a clock that did notkeep time, and the
second a power top that would lower electrically but needs to be
raised manually as the pump motor did not perform on the up
function.
Plenty of WOW factor with this instantly recognizable classic. An
honest presenting and no-nonsense appearance and demeanor. No
rodding, no huge horsepower soup ups, just a clean looking car
right off from the bowtie camp, and now in our Hallowed Halls.
