Z28 is the most famous Chevrolet RPO code ever, no other option
code has become so synonymous with high performance. Other option
codes have been used for well-known packages such as Z22, (Rally
Sport), and Z27, (Super Sport), but the option names/descriptions
became famous, not the RPO number. RPO Z28 is known as the Special
Performance Package, but no one uses that name. RPO Z28 was in
effect from 1967 through 1974. There were no Z28s in 1975 and 1976.
When the Z28 returned in 1977 it was as its own model, not an
option package. The change to a separate model reinforced the power
of the Z28 name. The Z28 came about as a means of making the new
1967 Chevy Camaro competitive in the SCCA Trans-Am races, a road
racing series that was rapidly gaining popularity among spectators
and auto manufacturers. In order to compete in the Trans-Am series,
the Camaro needed to be homologated. The SCCA production minimum
was 1,000 units, but the Z28 managed to go racing even though only
602 cars were built in 1967. There was some fancy paperwork
involving 350-cid Camaros as FIA, (the international racing
sanctioning body Federation Internationale de l'Automobile), Group
I sedans, and qualifying the same cars as Group II, (the Trans-Am
cars), vehicles with the Z28 option.
For consignment, a blast, (literally), from the past in the form of
the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro. This one is special due to it having the
elusive X33 code. Save for the partial VIN stamping being near
impossible to read as it is stamped in the alternate location, a
new correct DZ stamped carburetor being installed, and a
non-original transmission, all is still correct for this 1969 Z28
Camaro. Our consignor states that he is the 4th owner and the car
has been garage kept since 1972. The interior is all original save
for the radio and the headlight doors have been upgraded from
vacuum to electric. You are about to delve into one of the finest
examples of the fabled 1969 Z28 that has ever graced our Hallowed
Halls of Classic Auto Mall.
Exterior
Garnet Red covers the straight steel slabs on this car, which are
all minding their gaps very well and it's really nicely buffed and
has a glass like presentation with only a few minor faults upon
close inspection. Also adorning the exterior are dual wide black
painted on racing stripes, which.... well, race up the long hood of
this pony car stopping at the front windscreen, skip the expansive
Garnet Red roof, and continue on the small rear deck and cool
spoiler atop. All this steel frames 15-inch deep dish rally style
wheels all wrapped up in BF Goodrich raised white letter 215/70R15
rubber, (from the 5th week of 2019), on all 4 corners. All chrome
on bumpers, brite-work, and correct badging is excellent and
mirror-like, it just doesn't get any better than this!
Interior
A swing of the doors and we can see well preserved black embossed
vinyl door panels, and seats in the form of sleek high back
headrest buckets in front, and a 2 plus 2 rear bench. Racing up the
center is a pristine center console which houses the Hurst shifter,
and a bevy of 4 white faced gauges in it just below the dash. Some
wood grained applique frames the shifter, and is also used on the
various portions of the dash and glovebox. Speaking of the dash,
all original and fairly clean, and fronted by a wood applique
center rimmed steering wheel. The dash is raked inward as it glides
towards the floor and has the rally gauge package within its
confines. Original black carpet and nicely preserved tight black
headliner are all presenting as showroom. Also a shout out to the
trunk too, as it sports a checkered tweed vinyl liner, and has
correct spare and jack setup. Power steering and power brakes are
all installed on this X33 car and we note an aftermarket AM/FM
digital stereo.
Drivetrain
Under the reverse scooped hood residing within a pristine engine
bay is a date correct, (L38), casting date and 3956618 casting
number 302ci V8. The stamping pad carries the correct V1205DZ
stamping, (Flint, December 5th, 1969 302ci V8 290hp 4bbl Manual
Transmission Z28), however a partial VIN stamping just above the
oil filter housing is nearly illegible. It has a correct Holley
List# 3923284DZ 4-barrel carburetor, our consignor notes this is a
new replacement carb, and a correct Z28 intake manifold, casting
number 3932472. A non-original P7H stamped Muncie M20 4-speed
manual transmission is on back, and this pushes power to a 12 bolt
rear with 3.73 posi gears. This rear axle carries the correct
casting number 3894860NF, correct casting date, D99, and correct
stamping codes, BU0411. Lightly surface rusted exhaust manifolds
from the factory flow out of a beautifully restored Chevrolet
orange painted block, snazzy cast aluminum ribbed valve covers, and
a correct air black cleaner housing. All hoses are nice and supple,
and everything else is gleaming and screaming for attention under
this hood. No rust or corrosion or even a speck of dirt!
Undercarriage
All's well underneath which has been completely restored with clean
black for the frame, flooring and rockers, and they are looking
good! A sturdy unibody and Flowmaster rust free like new exhaust
snakes by all buttoned up independent coil spring suspension on
front and new leaf springs on the rear. Drum brakes are on back and
discs upfront, and are power assisted.
Drive-Ability
This fine muscle X33 code example fired right up, ran very nicely
and handled all the challenges of our test track and critical eye
for anything not working. We found the right front tire tends to
rub the fender during right hand turns and the car pulls to the
left when braking. All else was a pleasurable muscle car experience
right out of 1969 Peabody.
A beautiful restoration indeed, all around nice X33 code Camaro
with plenty of attention to detail during the restoration, and
nearly all the right numbers to keep any Camaro aficionadosated.
"Tranquility base here..the Eagle has landed!" Now get in here fast
to grab this Camaro before I put it in my own collection.
