Vehicle Description
1982 Chevrolet Corvette Collectors Edition
The 1982 Collectors Edition was the first Corvette with a hatchback
rear window, foreshadowing the C4 Corvette. A special color scheme
was used inside and out and Collector Edition badges were featured.
The special, exclusive aluminum wheels were designed to look like
the optional bolt-on wheels of the 1967 model. The Collectors
Edition had a 0" in the sixth digit of the VIN rather than the "8"
found on standard Corvettes. This was the first Corvette to sell
for more than $20,000, with a base price of $22,537.59. The
Collectors Edition had unlimited availability and 6,759 were
produced out of a 1982 total production of 25,407.
This 1982 Collectors Edition Corvette presents in good condition.
It is bathed in correct Silver Beige Metallic, has the right
badging, and brown to tan fading side decal directly out of the
time machine for the early 1980's Peabody. With this car comes a
binder of service paperwork and the original order form. Displaying
a mere 30,294 miles on the odometer and looking about as close to
showroom new, both inside and out, this Collectors Edition is prime
fodder for even the most discerning collector.
Exterior
Silver Beige Metallic paint was the color of every 1982 Collectors
Edition Corvette produced, and this is no exception. There are a
few areas of touch up on the nose of the car and these are a bit
rough, but overall the paint is in good condition on the
fiberglass. Dark brown curvaceous pin-striping wraps around the
passenger compartment and highlights the fenders. A brown to tan
fade is seen on the Corvette cove starting in the front quarter and
fading to the SilverBeige on the doors. The all fiberglass body is
in good condition. Tinted glass "T" tops, which are removable, are
scratch free and clear. A hatchback style greenhouse glass window
covers the rear deck. At the back of this hatchback is a small
spoiler on top, and just below on the rounded over rear of the car
are the circular tail lighting which is deeply inset. Unique
wheels, in turbine style design, are patterned after the 1967
model's bolt on alloys, are also unique to this edition. Crossfire
injection badging is seen as well on the exterior. Goodyear Eagle
GT rubberwraps the corners around the turbine styled wheels.
Interior
Metallic Silver/Brown "spacesuit style leather" seating has
horizontal multi shade silver brown hue wide tuck and roll panels
on the bucket seating. These seats are showing a slight bit of
crazing in the material, particularly on the last panel in the
front on the buckets. This fade is mimicked on the door panels
which use the faded angled panels on the uppers with more
silver/beige metallic for the reminder. On the lower door panels,
we note these wrapped in smoked gray carpet. This same carpet in
good condition is seen throughout the cabin with a few smudges here
and there, but mostly unremarkable. An early 1980's style
rectangular dash has analog instrumentation with a center lineup of
warning lights. Another cluster of analog gauges is seen in the
center console, which includes the floor shifter, temp sliders and
radio between the bucket seats. A padded 3 spoke stock steering
wheel fronts the dash, and sports the crossed flags Corvette logo.
This wheel has some folds in the wrapping leather. Underneath the
tilt open hatchback glass is a nicely carpeted area for the goods
of the passengers, and also affords an area and a bag to store the
roof panels when you are enjoying the breeze in your hair!
Drivetrain
A 350ci V8 engine is fueled by the new EFI called Cross-Fire
Injection, which includes 2 throttle bodies combined with
Chevrolet's computer control system. A new 700R4 4-speed automatic
transmission with higher first and second gear, as well as a fourth
gear overdrive, increases acceleration, and improves fuel economy.
The 2.87 limited slip aides in this process. The entire engine
compartment presents in good condition showing no corrosion or
surface rusting and just a little dust.
Undercarriage
The underside of the car reveals that very slight surface rust is
present, but it is structurally very sound. Power disc brakes are
on all four wheels, and in front independent coil springs are on
for the suspension. In the back, fully independent suspension is
seen with a frame anchored differential unit. The position of each
wheel is established by 3 links, tubular axle drive shafts,
transverse strut rods and torque control arms. A dual outlet dual
single exhaust is on this unit.
Drive-Ability
A quick fire up and on the test track it exhibited all the
qualities one would expect from a Corvette. Snappy acceleration,
stable bias free panic stopping, and rail like handling. All
functions were in working condition at the time of the test
drive.
A functioning example of a rare CollectorsEdition Corvette. A
correct drivetrain, low low miles, and all original all buttoned up
in an early 80's design C3 package. This car will benefit from
having its legs stretched, and a good workout, not unlike a sleepy
thoroughbred, which has many races left in it. And it is truly
unique.
