Vehicle Description
1994 AM General M998 Humvee
Desert Storm brought us into the battlefield with the nearly live
action TV coverage that was available on cable news. During said
coverage, the general public and in particular car aficionados took
notice of these go everywhere vehicles our troops were using known
as the Humvee. Their fascination led to a trend where AM General
corporation which supplied the M998 Humvee to the military got the
brainchild idea to make these trucks available to the public, and
this became the Hummer line produced in their Mishawaka, Indiana
facility.
For consignment, a military spec AM General M998 Humvee with a
title verified 29,521 actual miles. A go anywhere, 4 door with
small rear cargo bed under a removable black hardtop, wide stance,
an able to go anywhere version of the Hummer from 1994. Purchased
by our consignor from a retired military member, and is believed to
have seen active duty in the Middle East due to spent shell casings
and sand under the rear seat. With the added removable top and 4
new canvas doors it's time to go crush something!
Exterior
A 14-inch ground clearance, and wide track stance that would make
any vintage rig green with envy, this big boy toy 4x4 is bathed in
Sand Tan, and looks just the part it did when in service. A
protective crash bar protects the grille and sports cargo sling D
rings and drilled holes. LED headlights flank the grille and just
outboard are 878th EN and ESC102 markings, denoting service in the
878th Infantry Engineering Battalion. A flat perfectly vertical
front split windshield sits neatly behind the vented hood, and all
body panels are straight and minding their gaps. New canvas doors
have been bolted on and a black fiberglass topper has been bolted
on in lieu of the former canvas top. More D-rings are seen sans
bumper out back with a towing package affixed. Some staining, chips
and cracks are noted in the paint, and we see cracked glass for the
toppers rear side windows and flip up rear window as well. The
tires are Goodyear Wrangler MT Military OZ rubber for excellent
off-road travel in mud, snow or sand. Forward march!
Interior
A swing of the tan canvas doors reveals simple tan canvas insides
with zip down windows. Moving inside, standard military issue heavy
duty cloth covers the front bucket seats which are simple and basic
in design and construction. The back has dual buckets, and front
and back flank a massive wide center console. The console, which is
set up much like an 18-wheel tractor, has multi levels, knobs for
the heat controllers, and a layout of gauges in front of the
driver. Mounted into the large console is the shift lever, 4x4
modes, and little else. A tan dash houses the instrumentation, as
well as all the toggles for starter, lighting and wipers. Just like
the big rigs inside here! Simple mats cover the tan steel floors
and an expansive storage area with extra canvas doors in the back
can hold just about any cargo you desire.
Drivetrain
A 6.2 Liter Turbo diesel powers through nearly anything mother
earth can throw at you. It has EFI and a TH400 3-speed automatic
transmission. A 2.73 final drive ratio drives the wheels, along
with the sturdy 4x4 transfer case with no leaks or drips. This big
diesel mill sits back in a dusty but rust free engine bay and
allows for better weight distribution...gosh the military thinks of
everything!! Left...Left...Left Right Left!
Undercarriage
Solid as it should be, mostly surface rust free with 4-wheel
independent coil sprung suspension, and 4 wheel power disc brakes.
Used but definitely never abused can sum it up underneath. Ten
HUT!
Drive-Ability
Classic Auto Mall has had the pleasure of hosting many unique
vehicles, and this truck ranks near the top of our "Must Drive"
list. It is 4x4 on steroids firing right up, and that big diesel
humming along gives you the feeling of a go anywhere sound. We do
not have a beach, or a mountain, or even a stream to wade her into,
but mechanically it is very sound, and drove nicely, all the while
giving me the impression of being in a convoy moving across the
desert, and all those big rig sequence controls giving this writer
a feeling of power...Sir...yes Sir!! One point of note is a fuel
leak will need to be repaired before any long drives are made.
A nicely cared for all over vehicle, big diesel power, 4x4 to its
best performance, a wide track, and big knobbies and rear buckets
with room for 2 if you have more friends that want to get their
groove on. "Climb every mountain!"
