Vehicle Description
STK 3492 1950 Mercury Eight
The Mercury Eight was the first and only model produced by Mercury
from 1939 through 1951. The first post-war model was introduced in
1949 with distinctive 'pontoon' styling. This fully enclosed body
appearance ended the monotony of warmed-over pre-war styles and
sales figures for both Ford and Mercury broke records in 1949.
During that era, and beyond, the stylish 'Lead Sled' Merc Eight has
always been popular with customizers. This '50 Mercury Eight Coupe
has been fully restored with many custom and mechanical upgrades.
It received a 2-stage coat of Bright Red (1998) accented with
period-correct fender skirts, dual spotlights and steel wheels
w/caps, trim rings and wide-whites. All of the chrome, and there is
a lot of it, is in very good condition and the doors are fitted
with 'poppers'. The interior has been nicely restored in cream
vinyl. The front seat is power assisted and a handsome dash is
equipped with full factory instrumentation and original radio. The
headliner, door panels and carpeting are all in very good condition
and a custom floor shift has been installed. Climate control is
managed by a professionally installed air-conditioning system and a
beautiful '50 Merc steering wheel completes the package.
The Mercury is powered by a nicely dressed, rebuilt 350ci Chevy
small-block with aluminum intake and Edelbrock four-barrel
carburetor. A heavy-duty aluminum radiator has also been installed
and exhaust is routed through a custom dual system. This power
plant is backed by a GM 3-speed automatic gearbox and factory
differential. Both steering and braking are power assisted with
large drums on all four wheels. A front sway bar has been installed
and all electrics have been upgraded to a 12-volt system. This is a
classic Mercury Eight 'Lead Sled' Coupe with a custom design that
was well thought out and carefully implemented - it is literally
timeless. ALL VEHICLES SOLD "AS IS".
