Vehicle Description
This 1972 Buick Skylark GSX Tribute is pretty darn attractive
because it mixes serious big block power with serious rarity. But
because this is also a premium Buick, it makes sure it lives up to
those standards with an interior that has the best features,
including A/C. It makes for a sleek drop-top classic that leaves
you wanting for nothing.
The badging says GS, but we all know what this one is made to be -
an ultra-hot GSX. Saturn Yellow was only one of two colors for the
GSX, and it was the true signature one because it has the kind of
radiance to attract the attention this muscle car commands. So it's
great to see this quality application of this bold color. More than
just the paint, it really nails the full GSX style. The dual scoops
in the hood, Buick Rallye wheels, full-width rear spoiler, and wide
dual exhaust integrated into the bumper all make for the right
muscle car flair. The full stripe package looks awesome with the
dual racing stripes on the hood, and it was pure power car art with
the sharply-pointed side stripes that wrap around the rear and over
the spoiler. And it's all outlined with a sporty red pinstripe for
that premium/performance mix that it seems only a Buick could
provide. More than just an attractive package, the whole car is a
lesson in rarity.
There were only about 850 GS convertibles produced in 1972, and the
GSX upgrade can easily get you well into six-figure rarity. So a
great-looking tribute is the way to go, right? Except even those
will be hard to find. When it comes to Skylarks, the Custom line
(which is how this one came from the factory) was still
expensive/exclusive with about 3,600 convertibles made. So you're
even looking at a tantalizing rarity at a time when GM was the
undisputed world's largest automaker.
The black roof is new, and so it looks terrific against all the
glossy black stripes of the exterior. And because this is a great
color combo, there's also a full black interior underneath. There's
even a well-fitting convertible boot for when this is down. So the
way the inside and outside colors are so nicely coordinated gives
this Skylark a cool seamless appearance with the top up or down.
This all has a clean look with intricate details, right down to the
perforated upholstery. Power windows and a power convertible top
are an awesome duo usually reserved for luxury drop-tops to make it
easy to open them up to the world. And you'll happily do that even
in the summer thanks to cold-blowing air conditioning. There's even
an upgraded retro-style radio and upgraded speakers for the best in
driving music. And this is really about being a driver's machine.
That's why you have front bucket seats with a center console and
Hurst shifter in-between. The sports steering wheel is on a tilt
column to give you a clear view of the full gauges. Looking for the
tach? It's on the hood for a true classic head-up display.
Under the hood is the bright red block of Buick's mighty 455
cubic-inch V8. This upgraded motor has some great vintage
performance pieces like the Stage 1 intake that allows this to
breathe in fresh air from the hood scoops. These are joined by
upgrades like the Holley four-barrel carburetor, an MSD ignition,
an aluminum radiator, and headers feeding the dual exhaust. It's
built to be a powerful and confident car. So you take full control
of the big V8 with a Muncie four-speed manual transmission
featuring a McLeod twin-disc clutch. The suspension also features
power brakes, front discs, boxed rear arms, thick sway bars, power
steering, and wide BF Goodrich T/As.
