Vehicle Description
There's a reason why you don't see too many of these 1939 Ford
Deluxe Convertible Sedans. These were one of the most expensive
Fords around, and since it was near the end of The Depression, few
people went to the expense. They sold so few that the body style
didn't even return for the next year. So you've got awesome rarity
even before you take a look at the true classic style, flathead V8
power, overdrive setup, and awesome cruising attitude of this rare
vintage drop-top treat.
This is the kind of classic where it all comes together. The 1939
Deluxe model year was a legendary one where the teardrop headlight
and pointed grille became even bolder. And as we mentioned before,
the Convertible Sedan was so rare and expensive that it wasn't even
offered during this full generation. So while Ford was into mass
production in the 1930s, we'd be more likely to be comparing the
beauty and production numbers to Duesenberg and Pierce Arrow (had
they lived into 1939.) It's this level of rarity and elegance that
helped keep this car so well respected over the years. The maroon
paint has a nice gloss to highlight the curvy fenders. The
full-length trim helps show off the good fit of all four doors. And
the wheels look terrific with the classic white walls surrounding
the color-matched steel units. It's a nice vintage style where it's
quite attractive without feeling like a museum piece. It gives you
the look of a good collector where it's about maintaining and not
fidgeting.
You may have noticed something special about this convertible. The
roof and windows are a bit more permanent than the side curtain
setup of previous years. This one gives you the full body lines and
roll-down windows you could get in a limo-like sedan. However, the
top folds very compactly, and the B-pillar removes for a cleaner
and sportier style than just your average convertible. This is the
kind of premium setup you saw on upper-class cars like Packards.
The interior will remind you a bit of a Packard, too, because
there's a touch of upper-class feel from the clean brown
upholstery, matching door panels, wood-like trim, a classic heater
(for display), and the cool banjo-style steering wheel. It's pure
vintage motoring cool.
The well-kept classic feeling continues under the hood. You have
the correct-style 239 cubic-inch flathead V8. It has the right
vintage style with details like the oil bath air cleaner,
generator, and upgraded finned heads. But there are also the right
cruiser upgrades, like a Mercury four-inch crank that's going to
add power and displacement. There's also a 12-volt coil and
dual-point ignition. The way this fires up and runs smoothly
further reaffirms how special this example is. The floor-shifted
three-speed manual transmission gives you full control of this V8
powerhouse. And the rear end was upgraded with a Colombia
selectable overdrive unit that really makes this Ford a better
cruiser.
Complete with the owner's manual, this is the '39 Ford icon you
