For Sale: 1991 Ford Tempo in Morgantown, Pennsylvania
The Ford Tempo and its sister, the Mercury Topaz, were sold
domestically and abroad from 1984 to 1994. The Tempo was considered
a compact car and shared the radical forward-thinking design
championed by the Taurus. Two and four-door body styles were
available. The Tempo was equipped with a 2.3L inline four-cylinder
HSC, (High Swirl Combustion), engine or a diesel engine produced by
Mazda. Depending on the model year, buyers had three gearbox
options: a 3-speed automatic, a 4-speed automatic, and a 5-speed
manual transmission. The cars were FWD, but customers had the
option of AWD from 1987 to 1991. In 1988, (Second Generation), the
Tempo had a mild redesign in and out. The Tempo and Topaz were
available in 5 to 6 trim levels throughout its history. Ford
managed to sell almost three million copies of the Tempos and Topaz
but still lost money on the endeavor. The Tempo was succeeded by
the Ford Contour and the Mercury Mystique.
For consignment, the staple of high school parking lots across this
great land in the mid to late 1990's...a 1991 Ford Tempo GL sedan.
In their heyday these cars were seen everywhere, from the
aforementioned parking lots to nearly every suburban driveway, to
rental car locations around the nation, you couldn't take a turn
without spying one of the 3 plus million units Ford built during
the model's lifespan. Certainly not a classic, surely not pristine,
but with some minor TLC this car could again serve its purpose. A
mild mannered commuter car...now residing in the sacred halls of
Classic Auto Mall.

Exterior
This GL 4 door sedan, bathed in Silver Metallic is presenting much
as one would expect for a common used car of the era. Scuffs,
chips, touch ups, spot ins, and bubbling of rust abound throughout
the lower sections of the body. On the front horizon of the car, a
restyled grille shows with three thin horizontal chrome bands with
a Ford oval in the middle and two fashionable composite rectangular
headlamps with redesigned front turn signal housings on either
side. Red and black pinstriping has been added to the hood,
highlighting the twin body lines. A mix of black and stainless trim
highlights the open and airy greenhouse glass. A redesigned
posterior quarter window was designed to conform and blend evenly
with the redesigned rear door frame. Out back, a roomy trunk hovers
above 3 segmented tail lights and a body matching neoprene bumper
below. 14-inch saw blade style wheels are on the 4's and are
wrapped in deeply treaded blackwall rubber.
Interior
Plenty of red broadcloth is covering the seating and other surfaces
in the inside of this family sedan. Puffy buckets up front are
manually adjusted and are showingheavy soiling on the lower
bolsters along with wrinkling caused by foam degradation. A center
console houses the automatic shift lever, parking brake lever and
manual seat belt overrides along with a small open storage
compartment. The original dash is upfront with the factory AM/FM
stereo, heater and AC slides along with knobs for the lighting and
wipers. Red carpeting for the floors and a red headliner is tightly
adhered to the roof of this interior.
Drivetrain
A flip of the hood, and in an unrestored engine bay sits the power
plant that gives this car its motivation, which is a 2.3 Liter
inline 4 cylinder that has EFI and can pump out 98hp. On the back
is an FLC ATX 3-speed automatic transmission and a 3.26 final
drive.
Undercarriage
Slight patina, some road dirt and light surface rust are seen
underneath. Overall the floor pans and unibody are rust free and
totally structurally sound. The stock exhaust is suffering just a
bit with some surface rust but remains buttoned up with no leaks.
Independent McPherson struts are reserved for all 4 corners of this
car in the suspension department, and power disc brakes are on the
fronts with power drums in the rear.
Drive-Ability
While the engine did crank over strongly after a check of vital
fluids, it did not start. This could be due to bad fuel or other
ignition related issues.
Overall a blast from the past that isn't seen too often these days.
Why not turn a few wrenches and commute retro Ford style?
