Fiat departed from the US market at the end of the 1982 model year. Since the Spider remained a popular convertible, an independent importer (IAI) contracted with Pininfarina to continue distribution of the Spider in the US. These cars were produced in limited numbers (about 3000 total from 1983-1985, and are highly sought, as the preferred model for collectors. Since these cars were hand assembled at the Pininfarina factory, their quality and features surpassed those of the previous Fiat version. It is estimated only about 500 of these Pininfarina Azzurra versions without Fiat badges still remain. California versions with no rust and low miles have become almost impossible to find.
