This 1988 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am GTA is a very desirable total
package. After all, it is the hottest of Firebirds, and this one
has a full black package, T-tops, a loaded interior, and the larger
optional fuel-injected V8.
The GTA was the true bird of prey in the Firebird T/A lineup. It
received the biggest tires, biggest brakes, an aggressive vented
hood, and the best full body kit (including rear wing) to represent
all-out performance. So a meaner machine like this just seems like
it should be presented in black. This is a later respray that
delivers a nice gloss and shine so that you'll love the clean
luster you get when driving this classic on a Sunny Sunday
afternoon. Of course, the part of that satisfying presentation is
because you can tell there has been an overall commitment to
keeping this one looking sharp. There's a respected style in the
way the panels still line up so well. And because the full package
looks so dark, the golden GTA badging and crosslace wheels really
stand out.
The black interior looks quite nice on a performance-minded Pontiac
like this. It starts with the Ultima bucket seats that include
electronic inflatable bolstering for extra comfort in all
conditions. It's unknown if the odometer reflects the car's full
mileage, but the condition of the leather is a real telltale sign
of proper care no matter how far this one has traveled. This is
loaded with the best features, like power windows, cruise control,
a rear defogger, tilt steering column, power steering, and the
factory AM/FM/cassette stereo. There are also provisions for air
conditioning and power locks, but they will need servicing if you
want to return the function. In total, this one is attractive for
the way the interior is so well presented and preserved. That's
particularly impressive when it even looks like the interior never
spent much time with the T-tops out. That shows you true mindful
ownership.
There was one option everyone looks for in the GTA, and it's the
Corvette's L98. The VIN tells us this one was ordered with the
upgrade direct from the Van Nuys plant. The fuel-injected V8 has
been kept in stock condition and remains a strong runner. GM's
700R4 four-speed automatic transmission was a good pairing because
its stout construction can handle the power and torque produced by
the optional engine. Plus, its quick-shifting nature and overdrive
setup made it versatile for everything from street to highway use.
More than just the motor, the GTA was the king of the streets
because it received the WS6 suspension as standard. This is the
package that kept the Trans Am on top of enthusiast lists through
the 70s and 80s, and the GTAs came around when this also included
four-wheel power disc brakes.
Very dark, highly correct, and absolutely sleek, this GTA
represents a terrific limited edition sports car that will always
have an honored place in Pontiac history. Call today!!!
