Lee Iacocca and the Ford design team envisioned the Mustang as a
sports car for the budding youth market. Based on the economical
Falcon platform, the Mustang was produced on a tight design budget
and the project was completed in record time for production, with
Ford introducing the new model at the World's Fair in April of
1964. Ford projected to sell 100,000 units in that first model
year, however by the end of the first day of sales being offered,
dealers had sold 22,000 and selling over 120,000 by August of 1964.
The new Mustang was marketed as a 1965 model, however with many
mid-production changes introduced in the early Fall of 1964, many
hobbyists like refer to those pre-August cars as 1964-1/2 cars,
even though they are titled as 1965 cars. Available with a wide
range of numerous options, perspective Mustang buyers could
literally build the car they wanted from an economical and reliable
daily driver to a high-performance muscle car ready to take on the
competition on the boulevard or at the track! The concept launched
a segment of vehicles that would later become known as the pony car
market. At the end of the 1965 model year, Ford sold 681,000
Mustangs, far exceeding their original projections. Garage Kept
Motors is excited to feature this 1965 Ford Mustang for sale. This
car was treated to an older amateur restoration which is starting
to show some age; however, this Mustang still presents very well.
The custom orange hue is showing some age-related paint
deterioration, yet still presents with a nice shine. The front and
rear bumper chrome has some light patina but still shines with a
nice luster. The trunk is clean and features new vinyl floor mats
and matching spare tire cover. A striking feature of this Mustang
is its stance. The vintage set of Crager S/S 15' chrome wheels have
a set of 215/65R15 radial tires mounted out back and 205/65R15
radial tires in place up front which give this car a slight
California Rake, with the rear slightly lifted to a slight drop up
front. Inside the cabin the white interior has been likewise
cosmetically restored. The carpet, seat upholstery, headliner and
door panels look to have been replaced, but some time ago. There is
some light wear on the upholstery and carpet, but overall condition
is still good as shown in the accompanying photos. A Dual XD1222
AM/FM radio with CD player and AUX output has been installed in the
stock location and powers a set of Dual DS Series 6X9 speakers
mounted in the rear package tray. A Grant Classic foam rimmed
steering wheel and a custom accelerator pedal have been installed.
Between the factory bucket seats sits the floor mounted shifter and
a matching aftermarket console with cup holders. Under the hood
sits a 289 V8 with a 2bbl carburetor. The engine compartment has
been lightly detailed and features a chrome open element air
cleaner and valve covers. Power is transferred through a 3-speed
automatic transmission to the stock rear differential. Underneath
the chassis is unrestored but clean and the frame and floorboards
present overall as solid. This Mustang is equipped with power
steering and has been converted to front disc brakes. This car has
a nice tone with dual exhaust flowing through a set of turbo
mufflers with the tailpipes exiting out the rear with a set of
chrome tips. This Mustang has the classic looks and a real head
turner, sure to garner many a thumbs up and smile or two. This will
make a great car to cruise in or make trips for a ice cream on a
warm summer evening. Please call if interested or e-mail with
specific questions. Thanks for looking.
