Holsman of Chicago, Illinois was the first adopter of the
"highwheeler" concept, which some motoring pioneers believed
offered superior handling of primitive roads and wagon tracks.
While popular for a fleeting moment, the highwheeler soon fell out
of favor as pneumatic tires and suspension technology developed
exponentially. The purest expression of the Horseless Carriage,
this charming 1907 Holsman Model 4 Runabout features a simple
wagon-like "piano" body, with a 7-horsepower horizontally-opposed
two-cylinder engine mounted below the car, driving the enormous
rear wheels via fabric-covered belts. This rare surviving example
is presented in lovely condition with a light patina and many
pleasing period details. A fascinating piece of early motoring
history, representing the golden age of experimentation in the
