Vehicle Description
Cruisin Classics is proud to present to you today this incredible,
low-mileage 1988 Pontiac Fiero Formula. 1988 was the last year for
the Fiero, the only year for the Formula, and known to all Fiero
fans as the best year for handling and performance. Pontiac made
the Formula as a lower-cost alternative to the GT model - same
engine, transmission, and suspension, but with a notch-back body
and fewer standard options. This Formula, however, was ordered from
the factory with a long list of available options chosen, as you'll
see when we dig a little deeper into this sporty 2-seater. This
particular Fiero is one of only 299 Formulas produced with t-tops
and it has just over 3K miles on the odometer - this is a truly
rare find! The car looks stunning dressed in it's Medium Red
Metallic paint and black trim accents. Up front, you'll find
working pop-up headlights on the hood and a black chin spoiler
under the front bumper. A black body molding strip runs full-circle
around the entire car and has the door handles, locks, and turn
signal indicators integrated into it. Black rocker molding, sail
panels, trunk vents, t-tops, and side mirrors all add to the
cohesive look. Both doors are treated to Formula decals - the only
Formula badging on the car. A wide taillight runs the full width of
the rear of the car and a large spoiler wing rides atop the trunk.
Off-set black cross-lace wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial TA's
complete the exterior package. In most cases we'd walk around front
and open the hood to talk about the engine at this point, but not
with a Fiero. The Fiero was the first mid-engine car ever
mass-manufactured in the US and the engine is actually under the
rear deck lid of the car. When you open the lid you'll see a narrow
but very deep and functional carpeted trunk is at the very rear of
the car and the engine bay rests between it and the passenger
compartment. In the trunk there are vinyl bags and hold-down straps
for t-top storage. In the engine bay is a 2.8 liter fuel injected
V-6 with a Fiero logo'd red intake manifold and red striped valve
covers - a cool look. The V-6 is mated to a 5-speed manual Getrag
transmission that makes this little 2,600 lb car an absolute blast
to drive. Adding to the driving enjoyment is the new-for-1988 WS6
suspension, which was a big improvement over the system that
Pontiac used in the preceding 4 model years. Also improved for 1988
was the braking system with the addition of vented 4-wheel disc
brakes. At the front of the car under the hood is the original
spare tire and jack, headlight system, radiator, brake booster, and
washer fluid resevoir - no extra room for storage however. Open the
driver's door to find an unmolested, well-preserved original grey
interior. The door panels are in excellent condition and feature
optional vinyl map pockets. The multi-sectioned dash is free of
cracks and the sun-warping that is very common in Fieros. The dash
has dot-matrix panels and clear, original, working gauges. Housed
in the dash is a factory Delco AM/FM/Cassette stereo with 5-band EQ
- a nice upgraded option. The seats are cloth and are in excellent
condition with no stains, tears, or any visible wear. The carpet is
flawless and is topped with factory carpeted floormats. The center
console houses the shifter for the 5-speed, controls for the power
windows, a storage box to the rear, and a nice wide center with
plenty of room for both passenger's elbows. HVAC controls are in
the center of the dash and they pump out cold A/C and hot heat on
demand with a strong fan. Other amenities include tilt wheel,
cruise control, intermittent wipers, rear defrost, map lights,
passenger vanity mirror, and a working cigarette lighter. The
T-tops are tinted glass, have individual locks, and are easily
removed and re-installed. We do have the original owners manual,
service booklet, and dealer items that came with the car. To be
transparent, I am a Fiero fan and I've been daily driving them for
8 years now, and I've honestly never seen a Formula in such good
condition and with mileage so low since they were new in the 80's.
One of my 3 Fiero's is an 88 Formula and I can say truthfully that
it is by far the best handling and most fun of all the years. This
Fiero is a "holy grail" type of car for fans like me and if you
drive it, you're sure to become a die-hard fan too! Don't let the
opportunity to own this highly collectible, investment quality
Fiero pass you by!
