Vehicle Description
1975 BMW R90S Motorcycle
The BMW R90S is a 900cc sport motorcycle produced by BMW from 1973
to 1976. BMW commissioned designer Hans Muth to oversee the R90S,
which became the flagship of the boxer engined "/6" range. Sporting
distinctive two-tone paintwork, a bikini fairing and a new tail,
the R90S was intended to shrug off the enduring image of BMW bikes
as staid and utilitarian.
For consignment, a fully restored to near perfection 1975 BMW R90S
motorcycle. The restoration was a complete off frame job where all
parts were cleaned and replaced if necessary, new paint, and a
complete mechanical rebuild. The bike has won numerous awards and
the rear fender has been signed by the designer Hans Muth along
with Udo Giedl and Reg Pridmore. It shows as concours condition and
has a mere 5,821 miles.
Exterior
With the body and fairings off and engine out, the frame was powder
coated as well as various other components in the correct black.
The body parts were painted and now show as excellent in two tone
Daytona orange and just a touch of smoke gray fade. Painted on red
pinstriping adds some highlighting to this paint scheme. The paint
is by Holt. Seen is a bikini fairing housing 2 circular instruments
in black face style. A small curved windscreen is on the fairing
which surrounds the headlight and curving fenders are on front and
rear. The ducktail 3/4 solo seat is black leather and is surrounded
on back by a small protective bar in chrome. Under the seat is an
original tool kit and hand pump. All hardware was replaced with
stainless steel during this build and even stainless steel spokes
are on the rebuilt by Bud Harpel wheels which were then polished by
Norco Polishing. Correct badging is throughout, and new wiring is
running to all parts that utilize it.
Drivetrain
A Type 247 "airhead" engine with pushrod OHV two valves per
cylinder is the makeup of this air cooled "boxer" engine. During
the rebuild process the cylinders were Nikasiled and were bored to
match the original piston diameter. There is a new clutch assembly,
a lightened flywheel and the headers and silencers were replaced.
There is a new OEM wiring harness, and the carburetors were
rebuilt. Specs include 898cc's, dual 1-barrel carburetors which are
2 slide carbs Dellorto PHM38's. The transmission is a 5-speed
version. A shaft drive turns the rear wheel and tire. Suspension
consists of a front telescoping fork with hydraulic shock and rear
is a long swing arm with adjustable strut. Dual drilled disc brakes
are on front and a single SLS drum on back.
Two R90S bikes placed first and second at the very first AMA
Superbike race at Daytona International Speedway in 1976. On the
first place bike was Steve McLaughlin and on the second was Reg
Pridmore, who's signature is also on this bike.
Overall excellent, condition low miles, and a perfect ride ready to
be shown and enjoyed. Leader of the pack indeed!
