Vehicle Description
1965 Pontiac Grand Prix 2 Door Hardtop
Advertising summed it up very gracefully but very pointedly for
1965. An illustration so artists could exaggerate the wide track,
sleek lower lines, (as drawn), and all in a scene where the car is
attracting nothing but attention from bystanders. Then the copy
would read "Pontiac Grand Prix, if you had two wishes what would
the second one be!?"
For consignment, a 1 owner car bought right off the showroom floor
in 1965. Still having a copy of the original window sticker, it has
undergone several phases, all to improve looks or restore working
parts that were wearing out. Approximately 14,000 miles ago it
underwent a complete engine rebuild where some cubes were bored
into it. The transmission was redone 2000 miles ago. It has a
respray and the bumpers rechromed, now some snazzy mag wheels have
been added and is truly a wide track 2 door looker.
Exterior
An all steel rust free example, we see near perfectly minded gaps,
straight steel slabs bathed in a very nice respray of Blue
Charcoal. No faults to be seen on these exterior panels, just shiny
chrome adornments, and trimmings. Badging is all correct from the
period. From beak and stacked headlights to stern all is very nice,
and very correct. Fender skirts, and a trim spear running just
above the rockers and through said skirts is a nicely shaped crease
and follows the contours of this slight Coke bottle design in its
early stages. The shape of the rear glass and how it interacts with
the trunk on its side B pillars is simply sexy. Across the rear is
a side to side horizontal ribbed panel which includes the brake
lights and a black center with the highlighting ribs. Dual chrome
tipped exhausts peek out from under the large shiny rear bumper.
15-inch polished Eagle Alloy 5 spoke wheels are wrapped in
215/70R15 rubber from the 2nd week of 2013.
Interior
All buttoned up would best sum up the interior which is in a
beautifully preserved dark blue and how apropos for the exterior
scheme. Vertical tuck and roll door panels greet us upon entering,
have nice cranks and the GM armrest and square chromed door opener
lever in front of the armrest. A very clean stripe of blue carpet
covers the lower doors. Inside we see more blue vinyl with chromed
edged low back buckets, trimmed in tuck and roll inserts and smooth
bolsters, and looking just fab with no marks or stains. These
chairs and a back bench float in a sea of near perfect blue
carpeting. A center console races though the buckets and eventually
rises to the dash which is all original. On its way up we note the
shift lever and a Pontiac manifold vacuum gauge. This is all
floating in a field of walnut veneer which is actual walnut wood
and nicely preserved. The dash, as stated, is remaining original
with more wood veneer, resides ahead of the deluxe steering wheel
and hooded by the fullwidth dash pad were instruments and controls
set into a two-tier wood-grained panel that was trimmed in chrome.
A broad horizontal speedometer peaks at 120 mph, and flanking it
are the turn-signal indicators. The Indian head high-beam lamp
indicator is in the center of the speedo, and the odometer and
warning lamps reside below it. An aftermarket tachometer is
attached to the steering column. Above, a black headliner is
beautifully preserved and nice and tight. A shout to the trunk
which has a lovely floor covering of blue carpeting which is uber
clean.
Drivetrain
Definitely one of the nicer original engine bays you will feast
your eyes on. A rebuilt with approximately 14,000 mile 389ci V8
with a sky blue painted block rests between the fenders, has been
bored .030 over and our consignor stated it puts out 373hp,
although is not documented. Blue painted valve covers, and round
chromed open dual air cleaner covers are on top of dual Edelbrock
4-barrel carburetors. A rebuilt with 2,000 miles 3-speed TH400
automatic transmission on the back. On the rear axle is a Ford 9
inch3.73 posi-trac setup. HO exhaust manifolds are melting into a
stainless dual exhaust system. All hoses, wires and surfaces are
showroom condition under this beaked hood.
Undercarriage
Some patina and surface rust is noted on all the undercarriage
surfaces, but remains all solid construction under here.
Independent coil springs are the front suspension, and 4 link with
coil springs are on the back. Power drum brakes are on all 4
corners. No drips are seen from the lower end of the engine.
Drive-Ability
It fired right up, and smoothly idle from the start. We hit the
test track and it was ready to go, and go it did! Plenty of power
for nice acceleration, especially from those dual 4-barrels feeding
the engine with fossils and air. Good handling, and bias free
braking were experienced. All functions were working, (save for the
original clock).
Here we have a one owner car which spent its life in the loving
hands of its smitten owner. He just adores this car and is sad to
see it go, but life goes on. And when YOU pick this car up, you too
can live large in this beautiful preserved high end example of some
real muscle right out of the way back machine and 1965. It
elegantly blended luxury and sporty elements in a stylish
formal-roof personal coupe at a relatively affordable price.
