Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet K20 Pickup
The model year 1960 brought the Chevrolet pickup into the modern
era with its C/K series lineup. The "C" designation identified
two-wheel-drive pickups, and the "K" identified 4X4s. The most
common pickup was the C10, a half-ton truck with a 6.5- or 8-foot
cargo box. The C/K series trucks remained essentially the same
vehicle during a series of conservative redesigns, until 1997, when
the 1998 Silverado replaced it.
Chevrolet produces some of the finest trucks on the planet and has
been doing so for a long time. Within each model range their avid
fans, and this 1968 iteration is no exception. This truck was
treated to a painstakingly mechanical restoration with a slew of
upgrades including a big block V8, a new transfer case, a 5-speed
with overdrive transmission, and new master cylinder and booster
for the brake system just to name a few things. Our consignor
states that more work was completed on the interior for some
wonderful dress up, but all the while the exterior retains a
wonderful worker bee patina. Add in Dana axles and some snappy
wheels with knobby tires and you have a truck modified definitely
for the better, we have a winner! Bingo.
Exterior
Finished in what this writer believes is the original finish of
Island Teal, there are multiple scratches, dings, scrapes, a few
rust bubbles, a few invasive rust areas and touch ups around the
gaps, but the paint remains presentable with a wonderfully patinaed
finish. The chrome is in overall good condition along with badging
and trim. Up front, single headlights in a chrome bezel flank
chrome trimmed dual surrounds across the grille and an
orange/goldbowtie embellishment leads the way in the center. We
note a new bumper hanging proudly below. On the long steel bed we
note tie downs both at the belt line and inset aluminum hooks in
the center of the slab sided steel, possibly being a clue that this
hauler was once equipped with a camper. Inside the bed we note a
black plastic drop in bedliner for the sides and wheel houses as
well as the floor. An embossed Chevrolet tailgate is flanked on the
sides by flush mount tail lights and another new chrome bumper is
below. 16-inch black steel wheels with chrome caps and trim rings
are on all 4 corners and are wrapped in knobby LT305/70R16 rubber
from the 27th week of 2018.
Interior
An almost complete redo inside here with patinaed teal steel door
panels, nice door handles and cranks and an added speaker below.
Looking inside there is a new bench seat with perforated and
stitched vinyl tuck and roll inserts and vinyl bolsters both in
black. A 4 spoke bowtie badged steering wheel atop the tilt column
fronts the original dash. A greenish gray padded top all steel dash
which matches the exterior houses the original gauge cluster with
the factory tachometer, heater controls, and an aftermarket Retro
Sound AM/FM radio. The glove box door sits in front of the
passenger, while new black rubber floor mats flood the floor, and
above we note a simple ribbed steel headliner.
Drivetrain
Under the long heavy steel hood sits a courtesy of Summit Racing in
2020 454ci HO V8 crate engine. This sits in a clean but lightly
patinaed engine bay and a Holley 4-barrel carburetor sits atop. A
new NV4500 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive and a
hydraulic clutch is attached to the back of this powerful engine
and Dana 60 axles are on forboth the front and rear. Our consignor
states that a new transfer case was also installed to help keep all
4 tires turning. Scanning the engine bay we see a newer brake
master cylinder, brake booster, and radiator have been added.
Undercarriage
The strong black frame provides the backbone for the steel
underside of the bed and road drip splattered cab. We note onea few
areas of surface rust along with older undercoating, but certainly
no invasive rust. We also see power disc brakes on the front and
power drums on the rear, all attached to leaf spring suspension
both fore and aft. New dual exhaust works its way down to a black
painted Flowmaster mufflers and ends with 90 degree turn outs
behind each rear tire and we note a new fuel tank was recently
installed.
Drive-Ability
A turn of the key and this engine came to life with a throaty
growl. Slipping the shifter into 1st gear and we were off to the
races, or rather the Classic Auto Mall acreage, where the
transmission shifted smoothly, no hesitation was noted in the
engine, and a typical truck ride. The new interior proved to be
comfortable and while we didn't attempt any off-roading we can say
the 4 wheel drive works as intended. The only frown to rear its
head during the drive was the reverse lights not illuminating when
the transmission was shifted into reverse.
A decent quality restification with many new parts applied to a
very rust free solid bodied truck. A few faults on the paint and
bodywork front but overall a nice job, and we have a truck
available for the 68 era K20 fans.
