Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1971 Lancia Fulvia Sport
1.3S Zagato. Tastefully finished in red over black interior, this
Zagato-bodied Lancia was restored in Italy in the late 1990s and
made its way to the US by the early 2000s. Paint and body present
nicely; very tidy and correct engine compartment. Panel gaps and
door fitment are particularly good. Attractive 14-inch Cromodora
wheels are wearing Michelins.
Headlight covers were never offered on production cars, but were
included on designer Ercole Spada's prototype - they have been
painstakingly reproduced on this example and look fantastic
(especially when paired with the Carello driving lights).
Interior has been restored with correct materials; excellent dash,
door panels, headliner and steering wheel. Minor wear on driver's
seat. All lights, indicators, switches and gauges are working as
they should. Seat belts have been restored and the retractor wheels
work smoothly.
Mechanically, these cars were ahead of their time - featuring a
narrow-angle 1.3 liter V4 with a single cylinder head, the engine
architecture is similar to the modern-day Volkswagen VR6 engine
(Lancia pioneered this design in the 1920s). Power is transmitted
to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission with a
dogleg shift pattern. Runs and drives well and feels very "put
together."
Lancia dominated the Italian rally circuit in the late 1960s and
early 1970s, and a Fulvia won the FIA International Championship
for Manufacturers in 1972 (the predecessor series for the World
Rally Championship). It's easy to see the racing heritage when
driving one - handling and performance are sprightly, similar to a
BMW 2002 from the same era. The Zagato-built Sport coupe achieved
first in its class at the 1968, 1969 and 1971 Targa Florio, a
second place in its class finish at the 1969 12 Hours of Sebring
and first in its class at the 1969 24 Hours at Daytona.
Thanks to a careful restoration followed by two decades of
attentive ownership, this is a remarkably well-sorted example
without any of the gremlins that can plague a neglected car.
Records indicate a complete steering and suspension overhaul
(including tie rod ends, ball joints and bushings) 10,000
kilometers ago, plus a thermostat, water pump, rebuilt starter and
alternator. More recent service includes a rebuilt fuel pump,
radiator, 123 distributor with electronic ignition, and a brake
job. The twin Solex C35 carburetors are well tuned and this Lancia
starts easily and runs and drives great. It has seen regular and
recent use as a nice weather weekend driver and is ready for
immediate touring.
Factory tools, spare, jack, reproduction owner's manual, period
literature, two sets of keys, copies of historic Italian
registration documents, and records dating back to the 1990s are
included with the sale. For more information about this 1971 Lancia
