For Sale: 1960 Chrysler Imperial in St. Louis, Missouri

Vehicle Description

"I got me a Chrysler, it seats about 20; so hurry up and bring your jukebox money!" While not technically a Chrysler, the B-52's lyrics in "Loveshack" had it right all along.

This Imperial Crown Saratoga Convertible (VIN code 2) is one of only 618 examples made in 1960 and one of 17,703 total Imperials made in 1960. It was assembled on November 11, 1959, in Chrysler's Imperial factory in Detroit, Michigan (VIN code 4). The previous owner acquired the vehicle in 2017. Which had underwent a cosmetic restoration before his purchase.

The car's exterior is in overall excellent condition with only minor blemishes visible at close range. The car was repainted under prior ownership according to the seller. It features a contrasting white, power-folding top that is in very good order. The car's chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body. Chrysler's 1960 styling included fender-mounted sideview mirrors, requisite tailfins and a stylized spare-tire bump fashioned into the trunk lid. The engine bay is very tidy and the battery appears new.

This car rolls on Coker Classic wide whitewall tires, size 225/75R15 at all four corners. Each tire is wrapped around tru-spoke wire wheels. The wheels and tires are all in very good order and a full-size spare tire resides in the trunk. This car rides on a 129-inch wheelbase.

Under the hood is a 413 CID Wedge V-8 engine (code P-41) with a 10.1 compression ratio. Backing up the motor is a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission (code A466) and a 2.93:1 rear end. An oil change was completed in 2022. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power steering, four-wheel power drum brakes, power locks and power windows. The A/C compressor engages, but the blower is inop at time of listing. We are looking into the problem currently.

There is a replacement red interior with a color-coordinated dashboard and door panels. The red vinyl bench seats look great but one of the buttons on the driver's side seat bottom is missing, though the rear bench sports a center fold-down armrest. The black carpet offers some contrast while the metal dashboard matches the seats. The gauge cluster has a speedometer and a full set of ancillary gauges. On the left side of the gauges is Chrysler's push-button transmission. The two-spoke, square steering wheel with rounded corners is in overall great condition while the red inner door panels are also in very good order.

The 1960 Imperial adopted wildly exaggerated styling, featuring front fascia with a swooping bumper, gaping mesh grille, giant chrome eagle, and hooded quad headlights and tall rear fins. Soaring fins had bullet-style tail lamps at the peak of the fin, with a chrome ring surrounding it. The grille and bumper on the front of the 1960 used large pieces of heavy chrome, and the 'furrowed brows' of the fenders over the double sets of headlights gave the car a ponderous look. In common with most other 1960 Chrysler products, the Imperial featured the new "High-Tower" seat with the driver-side back individually contoured and raised above of the rest of the front seat for increased driver comfort and shoulder support. Also for 1960, Imperial changed back to 15-inch wheels from the 14-inch wheels that had been standard since the 1957 model. While the rest of Chrysler's lineup adopted unibody construction, Imperial retained its body on frame construction.

Documents include the original owner's manual.

Convertible competition to this Imperial in 1960 included Buick's Invicta, Cadillac's Eldorado Biarritz, Chrysler's New Yorker, Dodge's Polara, Lincoln's Continental Convertible, Mercury's Park Lane and Oldsmobile's 98 Convertible.

If you are an Imperial fan, a Chrysler groupie or you simply enjoy a great classic, post-war convertible, this Chrysler offers a lot of possibilities. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to view it for yourself.
