Do you like small classic cars like the Nash Metropolitan? For a
single model year, Nissan made a city car called the Figaro and we
have a convertible model at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. These rarely
seen micro cars are highly sought after and not easy to come
by.
One of only 2,000 examples made in 1991 and only one of 20,073
total units made, the Nissan Figaro is a front-engine, front-wheel
drive, two-door, 2+2, fixed-profile convertible manufactured by
Nissan for model year 1991 and marketed in Japan at Nissan Cherry
Stores. All units were right-hand drive.
As a fixed-profile convertible, the upper side elements of the
Figaro's bodywork remain fixed, while its fabric soft top retracts
in conjunction with a solid panel with a defroster-equipped glass
rear window-as seen in other fixed-profile convertibles, including
the original 1957 Fiat 500 and the Citroen 2CV.
This example is finished in Topaz Mist with Ivory leather interior.
Topaz was the "autumn" color, with car's color palette limited to
the four seasons and thus, four hues. The paint and trim are in
overall very good order but there are some blemishes visible on the
driver's side of the power-folding white soft-top. The bodywork is
straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy and the car's
chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body.
This Figaro rolls on Yokohama ECOs ES300 radials, size 165/70R12 at
every corner. Each one is mounted on a steel wheel with a white
beauty ring and a center cap. The wheels and tires are all in very
good condition.
Under the hood is a 1.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine routed
through a three-speed automatic transmission, front MacPherson
struts, rear four-link coil spring suspension; rack-and-pinion
steering and front ventilated disc and rear drum brakes.
Because of its origins at Pike Factory, Nissan's special project
group, the Figaro (along with the Nissan Pao, Be-1 and S-Cargo) are
known as Nissan's "Pike cars," and represented a design strategy
that adapted "design and marketing strategies from other industries
like personal electronics."
Standard equipment included ivory leather seats with contrasting
piping, air conditioning, chrome and Bakelite-style knobs,
soft-feel paint on the dashboard top, chrome-trimmed speedometer
with smaller inset gauges for fuel and engine temperature and
chrome-trimmed tachometer with inset clock. The front buckets look
good overall, but the driver's side exhibits some wear. The rear
bench seat is in good condition. The three-spoke steering wheel
looks great as does the center console and console-mounted shifter.
A factory AM/FM radio with a cassette deck completes the interior
car also has power windows.
With its design variously attributed to Naoki Sakai and/or Shoji
Takahashi, the design recalls that of the Gutbrod Superior, a
German fixed-profile convertible marketed from 1950 to 1954. In
2011, design critic Phil Patton, writing for the New York Times,
called the Pike cars "the height of postmodernism" and "unabashedly
retro, promiscuously combining elements of the Citroen 2CV, Renault
4, Mini and Fiat 500."
If you want a third car for the family, a cute droptop for your
kid, grandkids that doesn't look like anything else on the road,
come by MotoeXotica Classic Cars and check out this unique
Nissan.
