For Sale: 1950 Chevrolet Deluxe in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1950 Chevrolet Deluxe Sport Coupe

The use of words such as "Special", "Deluxe", "Custom", "Special Deluxe", and "Custom Deluxe" hit an all time high in the 1940's with every other manufacturer using these descriptive monikers for the naming of their car. Some of these were associated with trim levels, others were the actual name of the car, denoting overall quality. Even though there were many thousands of examples of each model in the public domain, the individual owner was led to the premise that they were literally the only one driving this model of car!

For consignment, a missing link between the end of the running board and rounded fender era, and the beginning of the fabulous finned era in the form of a 1950 Chevrolet Deluxe Sport Coupe. Aptly named due to its two doors and rounded design to slice through the air, save gas, and look great.

Exterior
A bit of an exterior project car where we see factory steel panels with some invasive rust on their seams with trimmings, areas of previous repairs not sanded well, and plenty of scratching and paint differences with color of the panels on various areas of this car. The car is currently gray and there are also areas where this gray is peeling off revealing the undercoating or previous paint colors, (white). Some rust bubbling is rearing its head under a few of the repairs especially on the lowers of this car. The gaps are off on the doors but the glass is good and the chrome is fairly shiny with our consignor stating that a new grille is coming along with the car but not currently installed. The chrome bumpers are very shiny and appear to be re-plated. Rounded over front quarters, a split windshield, gently curved roofline which creates the rear trunk rounded over bump can be seen from the side view. From the back, the trunk is flanked by dual rear rounded over quarters with small vertical tail lights attached to their back panels. The rear fender is a pontoon design and sports a chrome stone guard plate in its front section. There are fender skirts in the trunk for the rear quarters. For now the wide whitewall tires with red rims and shiny bowtie badged moon caps are covering the steel wheels. Also noted is a side trim spear, and an interpretative flying bird hood ornament.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we are greeted by nice two tone gray fuzzy broadcloth panels in dark and light gray. There are some thin delineating strips creating the forward looking design and on the door's lowers is a strip of vinyl in dark gray. In these fields are the actuators and cranks which are nice and shiny, and a gray vinyl armrest with a trimming in its center. Inside looks nearly new with a full broadcloth covered split back bench that has a light gray with vertical small stripes in darker gray broadcloth for the seats and half of the backs. The remainder is solid darker gray with bolsters and the "tub covering in darker fuzzy broadcloth with wide piping. The rear full bench has the same coverings and looks like new. Upfront, a large slightly worn rimmed bakelite steering wheel fronts a nearly new looking dash with plenty of modern styling. A single large round speedo with plenty of shades of gray and black and surrounding gauges is in the middle. Alower light gray panel on the bottom has buttons and pulls, and the dash top is full metal jacket in a cool gray coloring. The center of the dash houses the vertical radio with a band of chrome and bakelite pushbuttons. A large vertical ribbed chromed metal speaker cover is in the very center and next to it is a rectangular clock ashtray and lighter. A few bakelite knobs pepper the area surrounding the radio and speaker covering. Below is a chromed handle for the handbrake, a heater and some clean gray carpeting. Above is an original headliner appearing in yellowed and slightly faded mohair, with some damage from water on the passenger rear B pillar area. The consignor does state that a new headliner is coming with the car along with some new windlace.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 216.5ci inline 6 cylinder engine. It sits within an unrestored engine bay with lots of patina and some rust on the upper surface of the valve covering. A newer fuel filter is seen and working in conjunction with a 1-barrel carburetor, oil bath air cleaner and factory intake manifold. On the back is a 3 speed manual transmission with the help of a 4.11 rear axle propels the car forward. Aged hoses and wires are noted throughout.

Undercarriage
Plenty of surface rust throughout, some heavier than others with a new fuel tank. Some invasive rust is noted on the inner fenders. The floor pans are in good shape with plenty of patina but no rust. A newer exhaust has been installed and the pumpkin is a bit wet on the underside. Independent coil springs are in front and the ride for the back is courtesy leaf springs. Drum braking is on all 4 corners.

Drive-Ability
As mentioned this car is a bit of a project car and it shows in the drive-ability with the heater not blowing, the clock not working, radio silent, turn signals non functioning, and speedo and odometer not moving. That aside, the car started and idled smoothly, and moved forward when put into gear. Braking is manual and pulls to the left when pressed hard.

An interesting transition design from the bow tie company with this 1950 example. It will need some TLC and fixes on the electrical and mechanical fronts, as well as bodywork to remediate rust.
