Cruisin Classics has a rare treat for our Mopar friends in the form
of a 1974 Plymouth Roadrunner GTX. Only 386 of these were built and
very few with the Wimbledon interior that is found in this one. The
Roadrunner was built between 1968 and 1980. Plymouth developed the
Roadrunner to be able to offer a lower priced, basic trim model
versus the upscale more expensive GTX that was known as the
"Gentlemen's muscle car" It is said that Plymouth paid Warner
Brothers $50,000 to use the name and likeness of the Roadrunner and
Wile E. Coyote cartoon characters. All of the 386 Roadrunner GTX
440ci built in 1974 were mated to a 727 TorqueFlite automatic
transmission, manual transmissions were not offered. There has been
a long time debate as to what exactly the letters GTX stand for,
many believe that technically they don't mean anything while others
believe they stand for Grand Touring Extra and finally those who
believe GT does stand for Grand Touring but the X means nothing.
There does seem to be a general consensus that whatever GTX stands
for that it was developed by the Plymouth marketing department to
compete with the very popular and fast selling GTO. This particular
GTX is a nicely optioned car with power disc brakes, power
steering, rear defrost, remote mirror, tinted glass, factory tach,
factory gauges, functioning factory air conditioning and last but
certainly not least is the very rare highly sought after Wimbledon
plaid interior. We have a photo catalog of the rotisserie
restoration of this car, it was at this point it experienced a
color change from its original code JA5 Dark silver metallic to its
current finish of code FE5 Rallye red. It was at this same point
that the original red stripes were changed to the white stripes
found on the car today. The brilliant red paint with white stripes
and the red white and black Wimbledon interior make for a very
stunning combination. The power is provided by a 1974 440ci (NOM)
engine with Edelbrock E-Street fuel injection mated to the numbers
matching 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission with an 8
Chrysler posi rear end with 3.23 gears. This is an absolutely
stunning, extremely rare Roadrunner that is guaranteed to be the
center of attention anywhere it goes. If you have been looking for
something unique that is sure to appreciate in value you owe it to
yourself to consider this beautiful Mopar.
