Vehicle Description
2001 Saturn Sky Convertible
Alex C. Mair began discussions of a "revolutionary new" small car
project, codenamed Saturn, in June 1982, soon after the GM J
platform was introduced internationally. In November 1983, the
Saturn idea was publicized by General Motors' Chairman Roger B.
Smith and GM's President F. James McDonald. Twelve months later,
the first Saturn demonstration vehicle was revealed. On January 7,
1985, the Saturn Corporation was officially founded. Citing full
disclosure, Saturn was founded as a private, employee-owned
company, by former GM leadership. They remained private until GM
bought them out, and effectively "rewrote" company history.
For consignment, a Sky roadster which inspired our consignor owner
to be attracted to this car at the 1985 New York Auto Show. He
eventually ordered the car when it was officially introduced and
took delivery in May of '06. It was its everyday driver for many
years, and was always cared for and well maintained. It has never
been raced. It is an all original car, and save for two minor
parking lot incidents and an added stripe is still looking good. A
large binder of documents including dealership brochures, the build
sheet, window sticker, promotional forms, along with tons of other
information and swag is also included with your purchase.
Exterior
The factory warm silver paint covers this car which is covering
dent-resistant polymer panels. A large neoprene bumper is fronting
the bottom of the car and has various air inlets, an aluminum
billet ribbed grille, (replacing the original plastic), installed,
and has some turn signals lights in the front corners. Another
horizontal opening for more air flow is noted just below the hood.
Large "aero" headlights are sculpted into the front quarters and
flank a side vented hood. A small vertical cove is also noted for
the front quarters. As we scan rearward, small rounded doors and a
bulbous rear with more "aero" inset tail lights are on each rear
quarter corner. A black canvas top which is a manual operation
version is on and shows a few wear through and tears, all of them
being minor. The car has been custom striped in a beautifully
contrasting deep red/orange central racing stripe. Tinted glass is
all around and this car has a wonderful rounded shape, with even
the trunk opening in a rear hinge. Big 18-inch wheels are wrapped
with 245/45R18 tires from the 28th week of 2014 on all 4 corners.
These tires are slightly dry rotted in the tread grooves and should
be replaced. Of note, our consignor is including 4 mounted winter
tires should you decide to brave the snow and ice. Overall the body
is good with a few scratches and dents and dings mostly reserved
for the rockers and bottom of wheel wells and we note some paint
differentiation on the sides, coming from the earlier mentioned
parking lot fiascos.
Interior
A swing of the rounded over sporty doors allows us access to the
drivers compartment where I see space age designed high back
buckets covered in black broadcloth. The inserts have a slight
crosshatch pattern on them, and bolsters are plain and nicely
preserved. The front seat has been raised at the rails because the
consignors wife needed better front visibility and a few cigarette
burns are noted within the seats. Running between the buckets is a
central console in rounded over form. It widens in the center to
accommodate the shifter and a red painted edged panel which is
mostly satin aluminum faux finish. The center of the dash rises
from this console, and has the climate controls, digital AM/FM/CD
stereo and a series of rounded knobs for upper controls. In front
of the driver are deep inset sweeping gauges with analog readouts.
The factory steering wheel fronts this dash and has a few controls
in its spokes. Gray molded sleek panels are on the doors, and gray
carpeting is on the floors. All very clean and slightly used in
their condition.
Drivetrain
Under the forward hinged hood is revealed the power plant which is
in clean 2.4 liter 4 cylinder form. It has EFI and an AEM cold air
induction system has been installed for better fuel economy. There
is a 5L40E 5-speed automatic transmission on back with a 3.91
limited slip differential working with it. For a better exhale, a
Magnaflow exhaust is now on and is like new.
Undercarriage
Mostly clean with a few concerns. Mainly in the passenger's floor
pan displaying invasive rust near the center hump. 4 wheel
independent SLA suspension os on, with 4 wheel power disc
braking.
Drive-Ability
A quick fire up and on the test track it showed its stuff with nice
handling, good acceleration, and bias free braking. I noticed the
ABS light was on, and there were a few mystery squeaks coming from
the dash. All other functions were in working order.
With plenty of receipts to prove maintenance, some nifty dealership
promo posters and brochures, and mounted Blizzak snow tires to come
along with the deal, this 06 Sky is showing an outlook clear and
sunny.
