Vehicle Description
1946 Ford F-100 Pickup
Pickups were the first civilian vehicles to come back after WWII
because they were the workhorses needed to help rebuild in a
peacetime economy. We were out of the war in '46, and some of the
great American iconic elements came back. Steel was becoming more
plentiful by not being used up by the war effort, and in these old
trucks there is plenty of it in use.
For consignment, a custom build with a unique look starting with
the original beautiful design of a 1946 Ford F100 pickup truck.
This example has been rodded, has a consigner stated 429ci V8, has
been lowered, has snappy 17 inch Centerline polished wheels, plenty
of screaming red paint, and gives me the look of love (heart emoji,
heart emoji!).
Exterior
Starting up front, the bulbous fenders with the circular bezel
headlights flank a central all steel vertical ribbed grille and
move upward to a tall protuberant V hood that has been shaved of
any badging or ornaments. Below, a rounded over chromed bumper
frames the bottom of the all red painted grille. The fenders round
over the edges of the front quarters and sport a small circular
turn signal light in their front and centers. These ascend upward,
then downward to a central running board, which is all steel, and
frame the bottom of the bed box and rounded over rear fenders with
exaggerated back edges taking on an almost pontoon look. The
beautiful cab keeps the rounded look with a split front glass, a
nice roofline, and well minded gapped doors with chrome handles.
The sides of the bed box are all steel, and have a nicely rounded
over top edge so when you lean over it you will not be injured.
(Load 'er up!) The tail lights have been moved and are now
slit-like oval LEDuntilmounted onto the rear roll pan just below
the tailgate. Another curved shiny bumper frames the bottom back of
the truck. The bed is lined with new oak planking with anodized
charcoal gray ribbing and shows as nearly perfect. A side view
gives the look of pure 40's design and is definitely a shower and
has a lower look. Paint is the deep end of the pool red, and has
been well applied with a very smooth finish. 17-inch Centerline 5
spokes are wrapped in 245/40ZR17's in front and 255/45ZR17's in
back, all from the 20th week of 2013, adding some bling to the
corners.
Interior
Gray vinyl vertical wide tuck and roll panels have a thin red swoop
running from the outer red steel frame of the doors Actuators and
cranks are chromed to perfection. Inside, late model buckets are
now providing the inside seating. These are high backs, have
stitched panels throughout them and are in perfectly preserved gray
leather. Red piping abounds between each panel, and we note these
chairs are power adjustable. A brushed aluminum finished tilt
column has a wood rimmed rally wheel on top and this fronts a
totally custom dash. This is painted in more red, and has an
instrument panel in front of the steering wheel. T his presents
witha ribbed design fitted with white faced VDO vintage looking
instrumentation. The speedometer has a digital readout odometer.
The remainder of the dash is simply adorned with some knobs for the
Vintage Air and fan. Gray carpeting in just a bit darker shade,
covers the floors. Above a black headliner is perfectly installed
to the curvature of the roofline.
Drivetrain
Under the totally restored hood and engine bay is a rebuilt 429ci
V8 which has been bored over .030. There is an Edelbrock intake
manifold on top and a 4 barrel Holley carburetor underneath the
open round air cleaner covering. Cast valve coverings, supple
wiring and hoses, and a new aluminum radiator are seen. On the back
is a Tremec 3550 5-speed manual transmission throwing power to a
Ford 9 inch rear axle. Headers and a Flowmaster exhaust are there
for the exhale. All in excellent condition and all like new.
Undercarriage
Not to be outdone by the topside, the undercarriage is pristine. No
dirt or corrosion or patina. Just black painted framing, varnished
wood for the bed and certainly no rust. Independent coil springs
are upfront, and a 4 link with coil springs are in back. Power disc
braking is now on all 4 corners. Definitely a trailered look for
the undercarriage. No runs, drips or leakings!
Drive-Ability
This baby fired right up and off to the test track where it
performed very well. Absolutely no match for the acceleration felt,
bias free braking to bring us back to earth after a foot pounding,
and easy steering and shifting with the Hurst shifter. A nice
roller and great neck snapper.
1946 never looked so good, and so red. This build was obviously
done by a group of restorers who knew what they were doing. As the
consignor stated, it was built by a "very great company" to which I
googled it and there is no company by this name so we will take his
word for it! (The name remains a mystery)
