The Ford Capri made its debut at the 1969 Brussels Motor Show to a warm reception from the public. A well-deserved success after almost ten years of studies and prototypes by the German and British branches of Ford, which in 1965 saw the Dagenham style center prevail.
The Capri represented a particularly ambitious project for the European Ford, which intended to retrace the international success achieved with the "Escort".
The Capri was produced in Northern European factories located in Germany, Belgium and England and, despite the same external bodywork, was offered with different engines depending on the target markets.
The displacements varied from 1,300 - 1,600 - 1,700 up to 3,000 cc, as the maximum motorisation of the carburettor-powered versions.
Only later was the injection RS2600 introduced, from which the racing cars were later derived.
Few models in the 1970s offered the allure of a sporty yet affordable coupe like the Ford Capri. For over fifteen years this model represented the meeting point between versatility and fun, all at an absolutely reasonable price, a combination that allowed the Ford Capri to be produced in no less than 1.8 million units.
To make the Capri famous and increase its success, it was certainly the numerous victories in the Touring car championships, where the Ford coupe won 2 consecutive titles in the European Touring Car Championship (1971 - 1972)
Also in 1972 he also conquered the prestigious 24 Hours of Spa and the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans (in his tourism category)
