In 1979 Pontiac decided to offer its first Special Anniversary
Trans Am.The front end was restyled and a limited-edition
anniversary package was made available: platinum silver paint with
charcoal gray upper paint accents and mirrored t-tops. The car was
equipped with a special interior featuring power windows, silver
leather seats with custom-embroidered Firebird emblems and
aircraft-inspired red lighting for the gauges. The 10th-anniversary
cars also featured special 10th-anniversary decals, including a
Firebird hood decal that extended off of the hood and onto the
front fenders.
Pontiac produced 7,500 10th anniversary cars, of which 1,817 were
equipped with the high-output Pontiac T/A 6.6 W72 400 engine. these
special power plants were the last of the line of the Pontiac large
displacement V8 engines. This car came with the only option on
these cars which was the automatic transmission with the gear ratio
of 2.73 on the cars with the Oldsmobile-produced 403 engine and the
TH350 automatic transmission. During period dyno testing, the
National Hot Rod Association rated the limited-availability T/A 6.6
high-output Pontiac 400 engine at 260-280 net horsepower, which was
significantly higher than Pontiac's conservative rating of
220hp.
Today this silver Screamin' Chicken stands as a true icon of 70's
muscle cars past, with only 46,083 miles registering on its
odometer. You would never guess that this Firebird is 42 years old.
This restoration looks absolutely stunning and is covered in the
factory original colored two-tone paint. Above the decal is the
shaker hood that has the lettering T/A 6.6 on either side. On the
roof you will find original, correct, mirrored T-tops. At the back
of the car is a slick rear spoiler and more Trans Am badging.
Pop the hood on this Firebird and you'll be greeted by an original
numbers matching L78 6.6L 403ci V8. Due to emission standards, 1979
was the final year that Pontiac offered all of its larger
displacement engines. Bolted to the factory 403ci Oldsmobile V8 is
the original TH-350 automatic transmission, which sends power to a
2.73 Posi-traction rear end. Spent gases travel down the original
headers to and out the original dual exhaust.
Power 4-wheel disc brakes are responsible for slowing the Firebird,
while the entire car rides on special 15x8 cast aluminum wheels
that have been wrapped in Hankok Ventus H101 Radials.
Open the door to this Trans Am and you'll find a very well
preserved silver leather interior that features firm bucket
seats.
Car to be collected from Salt Lake City, UT.
