To boost sales in 1955 Studebaker created 14 specially equipped President hardtop coupes for the auto show circuit. These special coupes had tritone paint, leather seats, an 8,000 rpm tach, 160 MPH speedometer and an engine turned dash. Other details included chrome wire wheel covers, dual exhaust, fog light bumperetts, back up lights and a wide chrome strip over the rear window. Received very well by the public, Studebaker decided to produce this special coupe naming it the “President Speedster,” a name previously used by Studebaker many years before. The design was a spin off of the Starliner coupe designed by Raymond Loewy in 1953. Producing only 2,215 of these Speedsters, they were only produced in 1955 and are very sought after and seldom seen today. Production cars were equipped with power steering, power brakes and the choice of an automatic or manual transmission.
