Vehicle Description
This 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner is a beautifully restored
retractable in a fantastic 50s color scheme with great options!
1958 proved to be a down year for the American automakers due to an
economic recession at the time that caused car sales to take a bit
of a dip. Nonetheless, companies such as the Ford Motor Company
re-vamped the styling on its 1958 passenger car line and FoMoCo
introduced these cars to the public on November 7, 1957. At the
nose, Ford completely redesigned the front ends including a new
hood, complete with a faux scoop, along with new honeycomb-style
grilles and bumpers that received a more futuristic design. New
"Safety-Twin" headlights were also incorporated into the front
fenders in 1958, the first time automakers were permitted to have
dual headlights on their cars and trucks. Down the side, the gold
beltline anodized trim was also enlarged from the previous year
models and increased the distinction of the 1958 Ford models. At
the rear, the taillights were also revamped moving away from the
single circle design to a matching dual oval design that straddled
a rectangular backup light, all of which was surrounded in chrome
trim. Sitting atop Ford's passenger car line was the Fairlane 500
series and the top-level Fairlane 500 was the Skyliner Retractable
that featured the iconic Hide-Away hardtop which made its initial
debut in 1957. Interestingly the Retractable Hide-Away hardtop had
actually been in the works at Ford for several years with the
initial thought being that the retracting hardtop would be
incorporated into Continental's Mark II. As the story goes, the
unique retracting hardtop design was scrapped in the mid-50s on the
Continental Mark II but was later repurposed to be used in the
Fairlane line under the name, the "Skyliner." What makes the
retractable hardtop so unique is that lifts off the car with the
push of a button and is stowed away in a rear compartment that is
completely flush with the body of the car while utilizing a complex
mechanical system made up of 10 solenoids, 7 high torque motors,
610 feet of wire, and numerous switches and relays. At the time,
the second most expensive Ford model in 1958 was the Skyliner
(behind the Thunderbird) so with the lackluster economic conditions
in 1958, only 14,713 units were produced. Powering this 1958
Skyliner is a 332 Cubic Inch V8 engine paired with a single 4
barrel carburetor that was said to have created 265 horsepower. The
332 V8 is backed by a Cruise-O-Matic Automatic transmission that
ensures that just about anyone can take this Retractable for a spin
around the block. This 1958 Ford Skyliner is loaded with options!

made much easier. Power steering makes maneuvering this 1958

with dealer add-on air conditioning so that you can stay cool even
on the hottest summer days. The Hide-Away Hardtop on this '58 Ford
works great and goes up and down with the simple pull or push of a
switch under the dash. Riding on a set of wide whitewall tires
paired with full Turbine-style wheelcovers, this 1958 Skyliner has
a truly classic look. The chrome and brightwork around the exterior
of this fifties Ford is in wonderful condition as well. The
exterior on this 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 has been correctly
refinished in a beautiful two-tone paint scheme consisting of
Gulfstream Blue and Colonial White which completes the exterior
look of the car. The interior on this 1958 Ford Retractable Hardtop
is absolutely stunning! The front and rear bench seats have been
reupholstered correctly in a beautiful two-tone color scheme made
up of Colonial White Vinyl with Blue Gulfstream Royal Scot Tweed
inserts. The Gulfstream Blue painted dash, two-tone upholstered
door panels, steering wheel, and blue carpeting are all in
fantastic shape and appear to be in their stock configuration. The
dash is equipped with a 120 MPH speedometer, temperature gauge, and
fuel gauge, along with a Town and Country AM radio and clock. A
dealer installed Ford-branded air conditioning unit is mounted
neatly under the dash as well. Whether you're buying your first
