Vehicle Description
1999 Plymouth Prowler Convertible
Chrysler engineers were given free rein to design whatever they
wanted in a "hot rod" or "sportster" type vehicle. Thomas C. Gale,
Chrysler's design and international director "love for 1930s-era
hot rods inspired Chrysler's latest design triumph, the
retro-styled Plymouth Prowler.". Gale, who has a hopped up 1932
Ford in his garage, approved the rod-inspired Plymouth Prowler as
the company's follow-up show-stopper to the Dodge Viper. An early
influence is credited to a Chrysler-sponsored project at the Art
Center College of Design that resulted in a thesis by Douglas
"Chip" Foose that included drawings of a retro-roadster. Foose
"designed it as a coupe for Chrysler to begin with but modified it
to a roadster version."
For consignment, a "retro rod" similar to an aftermarket hot rod
body being built from the ground up with all the trimmings, only
this one comes to us directly from a factory, the Conner Ave
factory. Only a mere 4,845 title verified miles are on this one
owner, always garage kept and never having seen rain or snow car, a
unique facet of automobilia from a major manufacturer. Oh, and did
I mention, a matchy matchy factory trailer that emulates the rear
end styling of this retro rod is included with your purchase? How's
about that for making a scene at the local cruise in?
Exterior
Whilst using predominantly aluminum panels and adhesive to blend
them together, this Prowler is in excellent condition, with no rust
or fillers, all original. The panels were then coated in PXT which
translates to Prowler Black. With its Indy style front wheels and
suspension with added floating fenders that magically turn with the
wheels, to its modern yet retro stylings, chopped drop top in black
canvas with a glass rear window and defogger, and curved back
trunk, you are in 1932/1999 wonderland! Sporting black front
bumpers, engineered to float yet absorb a 5mph crash, they are a
wonder of engineering. A few scuffs are noted on the dark argent
gray front bumpers, but nothing that shouldn't be able to be buffed
out and concealed. Keeping this throwback skate grounded are 17 and
20-inch blingy chrome 5 spoke wheels that are still wearing their
factory supplied rubber. A true time capsule here.
Trailer
Many potential Prowler owners walked away when they realized their
new purchase cost $40,000, but they needed to add $5,000 if they
wished to carry luggage. Today, these are a "must-have" item for
anyone considering buying a classic Prowler. The one included in
this deal looks as spotless as the car itself, mimickingthe sloping
rear end of the car as well as very similar tail lights mounted to
the bulbous fenders. Weighing in at a flyweight 385lbs and
measuring 96-inches long by 70-inches wide and 36-inches tall and
having a cargo capacity of 615lbs, this greatly expands the
function of the Prowler and allows for overnight trips. If storage
space is a problem, the tongue of the trailer can be removed for
storage, knocking the overall length down to 55-inches.
Interior
Charcoal black leather abounds with the buckets sitting proudly and
in near showroom condition. These flank a center console which
houses a glovebox, cupholder, and Autostick, (a shift mounted
version of the Tiptronic gear shift). Keeping in tune with other
earlier rods, this has a center elongated Prowler Black painted
oval which houses the instruments. A/C, power windows, power locks,
and the factory AM/FM/6 CD sound system are seen on the dash as
well. Above the steering column is a tachometer.
Drivetrain
A 3.6 Liter V6 powers this light and nimble car, and is fuel
injected. This is attached to a 4-speed automatic "auto-stick" with
the above noted tiptronic auto gear shift actuated gearbox. A 3.89
rear axle allows you to cruise at low RPM and yet have fun when the
pedal hits the metal.
Undercarriage
As expected, nothing of notability, just very slight low mileage
wear and tear, but it is really at a minimum. 4-wheel power disc
brakes are seen, and all else is structurally sound with the
all-wheel independent coil over suspension and the factory
exhaust.
Drive-Ability
My climb in and test drive revealed that there was a little "kick"
when I pressed the gas and the car had excellent pickup and ran
smoothly. It's definitely a head turner, and not something you see
every day, even at Classic Auto Mall where we see quite a lot, and
all in modern tech retro look form and turnkey LOW LOW mileage
condition you may have to change the break in oil...
Presenting in all its retro harken back to the hot rod era, all in
1999 trim and technology, we have a low mileage, nice running, very
clean Prowler, right out of the factory with no noodling or
wrenching required by the new owner. Just get in and put a smile on
your face!
