There's nothing wrong with being cute, that elusive attribute has
launched many a career. However, a utilitarian vehicle universally
accepted as one of the cutest vehicles of all time? That's the
Ferves Ranger in a nutshell. Founded by designer Carlo Ferrari in
1965, his Ferves (FERrari VEicoli Speciali) concern built the
Ranger between 1966 - 1971. It was designed as a go-anywhere,
do-anything, all-terrain vehicle, and a remarkably successful one
at that. With simple bodywork and high approach and departure
angles the Ranger was most commonly utilized in the Italian
countryside and by those looking for rugged, uncomplicated
transport. The agrarian Ranger was easy to troubleshoot, fix, and
locate parts for. As Ferves' first design, it provided all the
vehicular attributes to build a successful company, and yet, Ferves
only sold approximately 600 Rangers during its existence.
Today, appreciation and enthusiasm for the Ranger is on the rise
with many viewing it as a proto-Fiat Panda 4x4. With the secret
out, many recognize the subtle enjoyment of operating simple, fun,
and unique vehicles. While rare - many less than the 600 produced
are thought to survive - the Ranger is based on Fiat 500
mechanicals, a vintage car with a worldwide following, readily
available parts, and status as one of the most sought-after Fiat
500 derivatives. This Orange Ranger, chassis serial number FVS
0325, was brought to the United States to join an eclectic car
collection featuring unique collectible cars from around the world.
It would not be wrong to state that, while there, this Ranger
rubbed shoulders with some of the all-time greats, and deservedly
so!
While this Ranger may not return to the Italian countryside for
some time, it, and the cars of its type are now increasingly
appreciated as fun and pleasurable vehicles to be enjoyed without
the downsides of high service costs and mileage constraints. It is
high time this Ranger gives its next caretaker a daily dose of
cuteness and simple pleasures wherever they decide to take it
next.
