The Series DK Fleetmaster was introduced as the top trim level
model in the 1946 Chevrolet range, along with the lower level
Series DJ Chevrolet Stylemaster. The Fleetmaster, which replaced
the "prewar" Chevrolet Special Deluxe, was powered by a 216.5 cu in
(3.5 L) Straight-six engine driving through a 3 speed manual
transmission. It was offered in 2-door Town Sedan, 4-door Sport
Sedan, 2-door Sports Coupe, 2-door Convertible and 4-door Station
Wagon models. A Fleetline sub-series was available as the 2-door
Aero Sedan and 4-door Sport Master Sedan, both of which featured
"fastback" styling and additional triple moldings on all
fenders.
For consignment, a 1948 Fleetmaster "Woody Wagon". This beauty is
the factory steel and wood, and has been restored to the fullest.
It has plenty of room with 3 rows of seats and the original 216.5
I-6 cylinder engine and all working functions except the clock. Tic
Tock!
Exterior
A high domed hood and pontoon style front fenders with a curved
grille, lead the way on this original beauty. The chromed grille is
a horizontal ribbed slight V shape, and gets wider as your eye
moves down on the grille ending at the bumper which is also shiny
and bright. Chromed shiny rocker trim can be seen flanking on
either side, which from the side view shows off this wonderfully
elongated rounded english wheel-esque front and rear fenders, all
bathed in Oxford Maroon. This also shows up on the roof, which is
just above the split front windshield. Aft of the bulbous fenders
the wood begins and has been fully restored showing in correct ash
and mahogany trimmings and three dimensional inset panels. A
beautifully curved rear roofline seamlessly melts into the rear
upper swing up window frame in wood, and lower bottom hinged door
all for easy access to the storage compartment. Hanging off of the
back gate is a full metal maroon painted chromed edge spare tire
covering. It has a single round tail light on stalks on either
side, and below is a shiny split round the corner bumper nice and
wide. Wide whites by Firestone are wrapping Oxford Maroon wheels
with moon caps that have a red Chevrolet badge in the center.
Interior
The doors are simply beautiful with mahogany book matched veneer
panels covering the straight rust free steel of the doors. Here we
shiny actuators and cranks with a wood inserted knob, and a simple
vinyl covered armrest. Sipping inside I'm greeted with a faux wood
painted on dash and it shines like a crazy diamond. Not just from
the lacquered faux graining, but also from the chrome in Art Deco
form that covers the dash in horizontal ribbing and rectangular
gauges with 2 large round gauges on either side. Bakelite knobs and
pulls also pepper this dash and give it a warm cozy feel. Speaking
of warm and cozy, the benches are beautifully covered in pristine
naugahyde dyed brown. You have 3 to choose from where the second
row is more like a porch bench with its curved metal arms and
naugahyde seat. There is also a 3rd row full bench seat to choose
from and it is also pristine. Rubbed rubber floods the floors and
more wood paneling in ash and mahogany continues for the interior.
Above is a beautiful fairing strip ceiling with 90 degree wood
struts holding it together and curving with the roofline. In back a
small stowage area and the interior of the gate is lined with wood
and metal ribs to protect the wood. A wonderful warm presentation
in Art Deco and naugahyde with lots-o-chrome.
Drivetrain
Under that large domed hood is a fully restored engine bay is
thecorrect and original 216.5ci inline 6 cylinder mill. It is
topped with a 1-barrel carburetor which resides under an oil bath
air cleaner system. The block and valve covering are bathed in
pristine battleship gray paint. New wiring and hoses abound, and
this has a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive on back. The
rear axle is a 4.11. All is looking fab under this woody's
hoody.
Undercarriage
Obviously with the previously described parts to this car it was
undertaken by a passionate and talented builder, and underneath is
no exception. Solid framing and floor pans, all painted black, with
nice rockers and body hangers. Independent coil spring front and
leaf spring rear suspension is on, and drum brakes are on front,
and rear. Battleship gray is painted on the stamped steel floors
and black painted framing is supporting this car with structural
ease and integrity.
Drive-Ability
Not only a looker, but on the test track it can be deemed a cooker
too! Great smooth acceleration, effortless manual shifting, and
good handling for a large wood embellished weighty car. All
functions save for the clock were in working order, and I'd have to
say A plus for the drive-ability section.
A very nice and meticulous build with a full list of documentation
which reads like a who's who of quality automotive manufacturing.
Plenty of attention to detail, and a very nice interior. All you
need to do it turn the key and load up the fam and yup can
officially yell ROAD TRIP!
