Vehicle Description
1966 Ford F100 Pickup
In 1966, buyers could order a basic F-100 model for $1,950. Ford
offered two different fender style options as well. The Flareside
option, which had the fenders outside the box, raised the truck's
price to $2,069. The Styleside, which put the fenders inside the
box, cost $2,085. To create the look, the Styleside was extended
forward to become part of the cab. The new configuration eliminated
the gap between the bed and the cab, removing an area where trapped
dirt, mud and snow led to corrosion. Ford felt the new design would
offer a cleaner appearance and increased strength. This 1966 Ford
F-100 is a wonderful example of designers and engineers doing
everything correctly. In 1966, a new "Low Silhouette" pickup
featured a single speed transfer case and mono-beam front axle. The
truck sat lower than a typical 4WD pickup but had a 2 inch higher
break-over point. The mono-beam front axle used coil springs and
large radius arms similar to the twin I-Beam used on 2 wheel drive
trucks.
Peabody, let's get into the way back machine gracing our
much-revered halls here at Classic Auto Mall and it's going to take
us for a trip in, under around and through a 1966 Ford F-100
pickup. Bathed in burgundy and silver, a very correct truck, with
all nicely done trimmings, and some snappy chrome wheels and now
showing as a 9.0 out of 10. Previously owned by a gentleman in
Washington state and restored twice during his ownership tenure,
this hauler has lived a charmed life. A repaint in what can be
called the most well recognized hues for this truck and obviously
being garage kept has helped preserve the originality and good
looks.
Exterior
A very tasteful and nice visual mixture of burgundy and silver
interplay with straight steel panels minding their gaps very well.
Beautiful perfectly aligned trim spears with showroom condition
badging run from stem to stern at the beltline. The original style
grille, now pristine shows in its 1966 glory, with nary a fault on
it. You gotta love the Custom Cab badging in script writing
attached to each door. A shout out to the beautiful black vinyl
cover for the bed which is nice and tight as well as sparkling
clean. A look into the bed and we can see it was lined with texture
paint. To the rear where the Ford embossed and painted badging is
on the gate, another pristine later model bumper wraps everything
neatly up. We will not forget the lightly tinted glass, and shiny
chrome wheels with dog dish caps on all 4 corners on this well
built truck.
Interior
Not unlike it appeared in the showroom in 1966, we see the original
dash with small centered instrument clusters which give only the
basics, fuel, speed, and water temp, along with an alternator and
oil pressure gauges within a machine turned field. Dash central
holds an aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette radio for your listening
pleasure. A big steering wheel is fronting this dash, and on the
floors below are covered in a nice white deep pile carpeting with
black carpeted mats. The remainder of the dash shows off in silver
painted metal with a black padded topper over the steel. The
original style gray vinyl bench graces the passenger compartment,
and door panels use all burgundy steel with white vinyl inserts
very effectively to make this interior all come together and look
really original. Peering upward, we see a perforated ivory
cardboard headliner which continues down and wraps the rear of the
cab. Flipping the bench forward reveals the original fuel tank
tucked behind the seat.
Drivetrain
A flip of the 66 truck's hood and we see the original blue block,
blue valve covers and a black air cleaner assembly making up 352ci
of V8. On top feeding this mill is a 2-barrel carburetor and this
mill is capable of 208hp. On the back is a 4-speed manual
transmission which sends power to a Ford 9" rear axle. All is
looking nice within this restored but slightly dusty engine
bay.
Undercarriage
Some patina, slight surface rust, straight and strong steel framing
and solid floor pans along with solid body hangers and lower cab
corners greet us with the truck up on the lift. Twin I-beam
suspension with coil springs and radius arms are up front and in
the rear are leaf springs to provide the perfect truck-like ride.
Dual exhaust with glasspack style mufflers is on and drum brakes
are noted all around.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, smooth runner, great driver and good handling were
experienced during the test drive. Everything was working just
perfectly and we looked great doing it.
A very nice preservation of a twice restored truck keeping with the
factory look from 1966. This pickup has very few faults, is very
sound structurally, has good badging and chrome, and a snazzy
mostly original interior. I'm definitely seeing you in this truck
in your future Sherman, but don't be sad...you just need to visit
our Hallowed Halls to make this former hay hauler yours!
