The XK120's sensational blend of beauty and performance had put
Jaguar on the map as a leading builder of great sports cars -
especially in America. To keep pace with the increasing demand
overseas, the British automaker refined and upgraded the mighty
XK120 where it could, resulting in the XK140 for the 1955 model
year. The proven William Heynes-designed 3.4-liter inline-six
remained under the long, sweeping bonnet, now three inches further
forward and producing an additional ten horsepower. The newly
spacious cabin could also be had as an open top Drop Head Coupe
like its predecessor, offering the ability to enjoy open-air,
relaxed cruising on a redesigned frame and softer suspension.
This fine XK140 was completed at the Browns Lane plant in October
1956 and left wearing Pastel Blue paintwork and trimmed in Red
Connolly leather. Destined for Jaguar Cars New York nine days after
completion, little else is known about the Jaguar's early history.
By the early 2000s, 819005 had found its way to Alamo, California,
where it remained in original but rather tired condition. The owner
subsequently commissioned KATS British Car Service of Englewood,
Colorado to conduct a comprehensive restoration, starting with the
rebuilding of the original cylinder head, brakes, and radiator. All
major mechanical components including the engine, gearbox, and
differential were resealed, and it was equipped with a new
stainless steel exhaust system. Cosmetically, the car received all
new glass and brightwork, while the original body panels were media
blasted and professionally resprayed in elegant Pacific Blue. The
interior was tastefully reupholstered in tan leather and the
folding top assembly completely refurbished in matching dark blue
canvas. A set of chrome-plated wire wheels complement the rest of
the beautiful exterior.
Completed in 2006, this Drop Head Coupe continues to impress almost
two decades since its restoration. As an evolution of the
trailblazing XK120, it also comes with a number of desirable
improvements to comfort and usability, including rack-and-pinion
steering and electric overdrive. Today, this numbers-matching
example would make an ideal sports car for rallies, road events, or
local concours.
