Vehicle Description
2005 Ford Thunderbird Roadster
Ford began its development of the Thunderbird in the years
following World War II, during which American servicemen had the
opportunity to observe sleek European sports cars. General Motors
built the first American sports car: the Chevrolet Corvette,
released in 1953. The undeniably sleek Corvette's initial engine
performance was relatively underwhelming, but it was gaining lots
of attention from the press and public, and Ford was motivated to
respond, rushing the Thunderbird to the market in 1955. The 1955
Thunderbird was an immediate hit, selling more than 14,000 that
year, (compared to just 700 Corvettes). The success of the
Thunderbird led Chevrolet to continue production of, (and improve
upon), the Corvette, which soon became a tough competitor in the
sports car market.
This retro-themed two-seat Thunderbird shares platforms and
components with the Lincoln LS sedan, but comes wrapped in styling
that's straight out of the mid-1960s. It comes only as a
convertible, but an optional hardtop is offered for when the
weather turns foul, and this car has it. In Steel Blue Metallic,
the 2005 50th anniversary badged edition has a mere 19,668 title
verified original miles on it.
Exterior
Steel Blue Metallic with matching hardtop with porthole throwback
window installed, all in showroom condition graces the flowing
lines of this retro skate. The grille, all chrome, and mechanicals,
(door handles, trunk actuator etc) are all functioning and looking
great as well. Its rounded design is a modern take on the original
2 seater bird from 1955, small, compact, sporty and definitely
sexy. A mink coat for father is how it was referred to and this one
is no exception. Body matching neoprene bumpers now replace the
chrome of the original concept, but it still has shades of that
early greatness which sold many units throughout its 2 seat reign.
The car does have a power convertible top, which remains nearly
showroom new and is made of canvas and sports a glass rear window.
5 spoke 17-inch alloy wheels are wrapped in 235/70R17 rubber all
around.
Interior
Medium Steel Blue leather wrap the bucket seats inserts in tuck and
roll design. The bolsters are in charcoal and give a tasteful two
tone look to the interior and these power adjustable and heated
seats. Luxurious black carpet covers the flooring and rear deck
behind the seating. The dash contains white analog instrumentation
with a digital mileage/trip meters. A 6 disc CD player as well as
an AM FM stereo radio are molded into the center vertical light
bulb shaped console. An automatic transmission shift lever topped
with a blue metallic leather wrapping knob which sits between the
driver and passenger. All interior surfaces are immaculate, and
unmarried.
Drivetrain
A 280-horsepower, 3.9-liter V-8 engine drives the rear wheels via a
five-speed-automatic transmission. It is a Select Shift version so
you can go through the gears manually if you wish. EFI feeds it
fossils and air, it sports dual exhaust, and other mechanicals are
all pristine, as well as the engine compartment. On the back is a
3.58 conventional axle. Plastic coverings abound but are all very
clean even dust free.
Undercarriage
Much like new with slight surface rust on some of the usual cast
suspects but all unremarkable. Plenty of stamped aluminum parts,
dual exhaust and an X frame adds stability to the convertible top
version. Independent coil springs are all around as are power disc
braking. No road dirt is even present.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and smooth runner, this 2005 bird is a thrill ride
with plenty of power, all working functions and quick panic
stopping. A pleasure to drive.
Think retro when you envision this car in your garage and driveway.
It harkens back to the 2 seat version which when replaced with the
back seat version was initially viewed as an abomination. Things
normalized though and eventually it came back and here it is, live
and in Metallic Steel Blue color, porthole hardtop roof,
convertible if you want it top or down and all leather bucket seat
interior.
