1966 Ford Mustang Hardtop
What happened in 1966: Major News Stories include Miranda Rights /
Miranda warning becomes law, the world's first vertical Jump Jet,
the Harrier, is introduced, English Channel Hovercraft service
begins, China's Cultural Revolution Begins, Subway Strike in New
York brings the City to a stop, Miniskirts are in fashion, Charles
Whitman kills 14 and injures 31 on a killing spree at the
University Of Texas, US has nearly 500,000 troops in Vietnam,
Aberfan disaster in South Wales, Vietnam War international days of
protest. These were tumultuous times in the US, but all was
prosperous, leaving the public with money to spend.
For consignment, a 1966 Mustang, commissionedto be built by
agentleman in New Jersey and then used in parades under his
ownership. Draped in Pepper Gray Metallic, ahh the shades of the
modern Eleanor, and a clean black interior. A well optioned car
with power front disc brakes, power steering, and some hop up work
performed under the hood. All of this without losing the great
looks from way back in the second year of the first-generation
Mustang... but now only better!
Exterior
A respray of Pepper Gray Metallic covers the steel panels on this
car, and paint is in overall good condition but does have some
faults. There are a few areas of light spray
application, particularly at the wheel wells, some inclusions, and
evidence of body filler. The chrome and brite work on this car is
in very good condition and remains nice and shiny. Dual black
stripes race upward from the front valance, over the GT350 style
hood, and cover the roof before dropping down to finish off after
the trunk lid and rear valance. The iconic running horse is
corraled within the horizontally barred grille and the 3 bar tail
lights are present and accounted for out back. GT350 stripes in
black grace the lower rockers and are highlighted above by the well
known Mustang cove. 14-inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels
are on all 4 corners with polished lips and blacked out centers.
These blingy wheels are wrapped in deeply treaded 215/70R14
blackwall radials. Trumpet chromed tubes top off the exhaust piping
which peeks out of the lower rear panel through chrome bezeled
holes.
Interior
An interior restoration included a new headliner which is now
perfect and sports a light texture pattern in black. New black
carpeting is put in throughout, and the rear bench in smooth and
tuck and roll black vinyl is a perfect match to the black vinyl
front buckets. Up front the dash remains original with a black
camera case oval housing the round gauges which are lined up
perfectly, and have beautiful near immaculate shiny bezels. New
door panels are also in black vinyl and sport pristine handles and
cranks but show some wear and fade to red on the armrests. A radio
delete panel has been installed into dash central, but for your
auditory pleasure a modern digital AM/FM radio hangs below the
dash. The steering wheel fronting the dash has a thick black rim
and 3 drilled spokes for the right "look". The factory steering
column is on, and now has a SunPro tachometer strapped to the left
side. On the hump is a shiny T handle automatic shift lever. Just
an overall near showroom correct and beautiful presentation.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, in the nicely restored engine bay, is the correct
289ci V8 finished in Ford blue with just the right amount of patina
on it. Black crinkle finish ribbed Cobra valve covers are on and a
shiny Ford Motorsport air filter housing in chrome covers the
4-barrel carburetor below. An Edelbrock intake is bolted to the top
of the mill and on the back of this mill, is a C4 3-speed automatic
transmission. Turning the tires in the way back a Ford 8-inch 2.80
geared rear axle.
Undercarriage
Former, (emphasis on FORMER), rust was remediated and now all below
displays in satin black with the only surface rust to note being on
a few untreated components. Power front disc brakes work with power
rear drums for the Whoah factor and keeping this pony sure footed
is an independent coil spring suspension up front and leaf springs
in the rear. Dual exhaust is on and like new with Turbo mufflers
creating the perfect V8 harmony out the trumpet style tail
pipes.
Drive-Ability
With an example of this quality we were looking closely for any
faults and on the mechanical end the car fired right up and on the
test track performed great. Smooth acceleration and shifting, very
good braking, and looking good with all functions working during
the drive.
Although not totally original, it is a car that can show up to a
contest and take prizes with one hand tied behind its back. Miles
deep Pepper Gray paint, smooth and clean panels and experts all
working in their areas of expertise, we give you this beautiful
example of the 1966 Mustang.
