Vehicle Description
1986 Chevrolet El Camino
Rumor has it that Mattel's Elliot Handler, (the 'el' in Mattel),
spotted designer Harry Bradley's El Camino in the Mattel HQ parking
lot and commented, "Those are some hot wheels," coining the new
name for Mattel's line of toy cars, Hot Wheels. In fact, Elliot was
so impressed by Bradley's custom El Camino, he insisted that Mattel
use it as a model for the first line of Hot Wheels toy cars, (The
Fleetside). And the rest, as they say is history.
For consignment, a 1986 version of the El Camino. 75,000+ non
verifiable miles, and in good condition. A nice two tone color
combo exterior and interior. It runs well, has a few faults here
and there, but a car you can haul hay during the week, and take to
church on Sunday. Dual usage for this car will definitely show you
"the way".
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
Black slabbed sidedsteel that is fairly straight, with no rust, and
retains its shine is peppered with silver rockers, topping the bed
edges, and roof. Some chrome trim for the lower rockers, wheel
wells, and the delineation between the silver and black give it the
"look". The bed is black and has a large rubber ribbed liner
inside. On the back covering the bed, a vinyl pneumatic piston
hinged bed topper is seen. American Racing 15-inch 5 spoke polished
wheels are on all 4 corners and are wrapped with BF Goodrich T/A's.
Interesting the Conquista badge on the rear tailgate which gave the
customer the two tone paint, and extra trim on this car...uh
truck...uh car!
Interior
Nicely preserved maroon vinyl adorns the doors, along with a bottom
panel of red carpet, and fine toggles and handles. Inside we note
blazing red high backed buckets with velour inserts in some tuck
and roll and maroon bolsters to rest your weary posterior. The
seats show some wear and sagging and the red inserts appear to be
newer as they do not match. The GM standard dash is in and in black
with maroon padded vinyl surrounds. A central console races past
the chairs and up to the dash holding the shift lever on its way,
along with a console glovebox with padded vinyl door/armrest. An
aftermarket Alpine AM/FM/CD player in digital form is now inserted
into the dash. Maroon carpeting floods the floors and above is a
bright red broadcloth headliner.
Drivetrain
The original to the car 305ci V8 sits within the original but very
clean engine bay. It sports a 4-barrel carburetor, and has a 700R4
4-speed automatic attached to the rear. A 10 bolt differential
takes the power from the mill/transmission setup and puts it to the
rear wheels. A glasspack steel exhaust is now installed with the
absence of the catalytic converter.
Undercarriage
Very little light surface rust here with the tubs being sturdy,
some scratching off of the paint on the rockers, and areas of
dulling of the paint can be seen throughout. Independent coil
spring, and coil spring on the front and rear respectively is the
suspension. Brakes are power disc up front, and power drums on the
rear.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and decent driver. Typical for a 1986 El Camino
with good all around performance and a smooth quiet ride. Noted the
passenger's power window only works from the passenger's door not
the drivers.
Here we have a good example of the El Camino in Conquista Badging.
Well running, and in overall fair to good condition. Look, it's a
car, no it's a truck, no it's an El Camino! Come into Classic Auto
Mall and we will likely show you "the way" to see this!
