Vehicle Description
1929 Ford Model A Sedan
Ford customers made it clear in the mid-1920s that the venerable
Tin Lizzie - the Ford Model T - had run its course and that it was
time for Ford to develop the "next big thing" for the automobile
market. While competitors were building cars that were better
suited to the quickly modernizing roads and consumer tastes, Henry
Ford believed that the Model T was still the best option for those
living in rural areas, as well as those who desired accessible
prices. It became clear to everyone that updates and lower prices
for the T would no longer suffice, so in late 1926 Henry Ford
directed his engineers to start work on a new Ford - the Model
A.
For consignment, the next sensation after the Model T from Ford, in
the form of the Model A. BUT not your typical Model A a street
rodded version, all buttoned up and modernized for everyday use to
go and show. A new engine, all new paint over steel and fiberglass,
and modern interior with conveniences. 1929 and in 2023 style.
Exterior
This example starts with a steel body, adds on fiberglass fenders
and has a chopped top. It's all bathed some metallic burgundy and
it's well applied looking just like I'm peering into the deep end
of the pool. In front, a dual bar chrome bumper which is shades of
1929 curves around the bottom and just above more chrome with a bar
that houses the round headlights on either end flanking the
radiator. The radiator cowl is shaved of the cap and is painted
body matching burgundy. The cowled hood is sans its side panels,
showing off the mill underneath. Curvaceous fenders, and a running
board was typical of the design of the era, and this car holds true
to that genre. A stainless steel shiny front glass surround screams
out for your attention, along with a smaller side view mirror in
chrome, hanging off the tops of the doors. A large rear side window
offers up a panoramic view for the rear passengers, along with
plenty of room for those passengers. On back, a stalked tail lights
hang from both of the rear fenders, and a split dual bar bumper
wraps around each corner. The paint is all great, as are the steel
wheels which have moon caps in their centers, beauty rings in the
edges, and are all wrapped up in wide whitewall like new BFG
rubber.
Interior
It must be a "thing" with hot rodders to have some mystery system
to gain access to the car and this one is no different. It has
"door poppers" via a remote, so if you pat your head, rub your
belly and grab the remote you're in! But I kid, it's really easy.
Upon doing so I noticed wonderful like new cream door panels in
smooth leather with some wide dark tan tuck roll square pattern
textured leather inserts. Inside, the modern high back bucket front
seats and rear bench utilize the same two tone leather and design
motif. These chairs all float in nearly perfect burgundy carpeting
with stitched and wrapped edging. In front is the 1929 styled but
updated curved original design full metal jacket dash in burgundy
which sports some LED small lights and a central oval brushed
aluminum plate with black face and white lettered SW gauges. Below
we can see a Vintage AC and heat controller and vents. Also noted
is a long stalked Lokar shifter with machined aluminum topper. The
headliner and side opens are all excellent tan leather with the
headliner being closer to pure white, not unlike the driven snow. I
also note an AM/FM radio above in a roof center upper console in
this headliner in front.
Drivetrain
Under the open sided cowled hood, I can peer inside and see a
blinged out 5.0 liter V8 mill which sports EFI and dual exhaust. It
has a number of chrome add ons, and a C4 3-speed automatic tranny
on back. A C4 corvette rear 2.73 geared axle is the way to go with
this rodder. All like new and indeed it is! Also a bit braggadocio
but it deserves that moniker.
Undercarriage
Underneath, pure "spectacu-larity" with burgundy painted steel,
chromed half shafts, chromed springs, rack and pinion steering, and
shiny dual exhaust with mismatched Dynomax and Super Turbo
mufflers. Front and rear big power disc braking is on. The ride is
courtesy independent coil over front end suspension, and some coil
overs for the back end. Quite right! You're bloody well right with
this rodder...
Drive-Ability
This build and creation is bringing back the late roaring twenties,
was a nice experience for my test drive. I donned my straw hat,
tweed jacket, bow tie and plaid pants and was off to the test
track. Here it ran quietly, shifted effortlessly and handled near
perfectly with nearly no body roll whatsoever. All functions were
working swimmingly. HEE HAW!
When one says street rod I pay attention. When one says fully
dressed in leather and chrome with modern updates I swing my head
in that direction and crook my neck. It was worth the pain I will
be suffering with by doing so in the next few days, as this one is
a beautiful Hot Rod build, looking all 1929 but in a very modern
way. Gotta love it. Now let's go to a speakeasy and get to know
each other. Cue the Charleston and let's get all liquored up.
