Vehicle Description
1977 Chevrolet Impala Sedan
Who among us hard core car guys and gals cannot for the life of us
stop lifting off the accelerator when we see a Chevrolet Impala
alongside the road sitting there not moving? It's inbred that this
is the car nearly every police force utilized for years and years.
One suspects radar or timing strips or any number of nefarious ways
to nab a speeder. For this writer who enjoys a quick commute even
to the grocery store, I need to be diligent at every turn so as not
to be nabbed by the "fuzz" watching ever so diligently from the
interior of their Police Impala, GM's fleet car star.
For consignment, a "survivor" if you will in 1977 Chevrolet Impala
getup. This is a purported 2 owner car and was clearly kept since
new in the garage and enjoyed sparingly by the little old lady
prior owner all the time without the intention to be used as a
collector car. Nicely convenience optioned, all clean interior and
rust free exterior, this first year box design from '77 gracing the
halls of the Classic Auto Mall, and when I speed by on the golf
cart, I'm still tempted to step on the brake to avoid that ticket.
Which I will get not for speeding, but the golf carts have no way
to "click it!"
Exterior
With large straight steel side slab panels, 4 big doors and a long
trunk and hood, gaps are being well minded, and moldings are also
well aligned. All bathed in a respray of the original metallic
brown hue. A few inclusions and stone chips are noted in the
finish, but otherwise is looking fine and inline. Square and
rectangle design abounds on the rectangular headlights, turn
signals under said lamps, the clean front bumper, and side marker
lighting. A wide stainless rocker molding runs the length of this
car and shows no rust where it meets the paint. A chrome side view
mirror is attached to the driver's door and the long trunk lid as
well as the hood show nicely. On the back, more segmented
rectangular designs within straight panels for the taillights and
another pristine bumper below. Even the badge font is squared off.
A nicely textured tan vinyl top is wrapping the roof and shows
Impala badging in your grandmother's script. Basic black steel
wheels with dog dish caps are on the fours and are wrapped in like
new blackwall rubber completing the undercover cop look.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we see padded tan vinyl covering the doors
withpadded and molded armrests, broken up by the chrome window
cranks, actuators and on the driver's door a mirror joystick. A
hint of some wood applique finishes off these high end trimmed
swingers. Inside more tan vinyl in big bench with tuck and rolling,
some piping, and plenty of width proves the perfect place for my
posterior. In back is an equally comfortable rear bench, with the
same padding and design as the front, all clean and comfy. Clean
golden brown carpet floods the floors and in front floating above
is the original dash with a touch of wood applique showing heat and
A/C slides, power steering, the standard instrument cluster, and
the factory installed AM/FM radio. The tan felted broadcloth
headliner above is nice and tight.
Drivetrain
Within the clean and wonderfully detailed corrosion free engine
bay, is perched a 305ci V8 that is correct and original to the car.
This mill has a 2-barrel carburetor and a TH350 3-speed automatic
transmission on the back. The rear axle is of the 10 bolt variety
and all is looking good under the hood.
Undercarriage
Nice patina on all rust free surfaces, solid as a rock frame, floor
pans and even wheel wells are looking good with light patina and
road dirt. Front power disc brakes are seen as well as power drum
brakes for the back. Helping you chase down an errant criminal is
independent coil sprung front suspension and a 4 link with coil
spring arrangement in the rear with new shocks all the way around.
A new fuel tank is noted as well as a new muffler for the single
exhaust system. Amazingly clean and green environment under
here!
Drive-Ability
Normally I would not pay attention to driving one of these, but
this one called for me, due to its amazing condition. I answered
and slipped in, fired it up and was duly impressed. Good
performance, decent handling, and a smooth ride. Bias free braking,
and it all worked together for this well kept "collector" grade
automobile.
If you are feeling the want for a collector car but don't want to
cash in your IRA then this might be just the car for you. It would
not be most people's first choice, but in the end not many of these
survive in this condition, as most were fleet cars used until they
dropped. Not this car, it has been babied and well preserved. Come
in and see it in person and you too will be impressed, and if you
sit it along the side of the road, I'll be sure to "lift" as I
sweep by!
