Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
From boulevard cruising to backroad bruising, it's hard to find a
better all-around performer than a Corvette. And once Chevrolet
firmly established the brand as a global tour de force, it began a
constant quest to achieve increasing levels of performance and
desirability. No generation of Corvette emphasizes the transition
from muscle car to all-out sports car better than the C3.
This beautiful Corvette, with a very nice color combination, graces
our Hallowed Halls here at Classic Auto Mall. It stands out as
something with some slight customization from the original look of
1968 but still keeps the timeless Stingray lines and iconic styling
cues. Exposed but sunken in headlights, a custom grille, wide
fender flares and black rockers just adds to the exterior Corvette
mystique. With a title verified 47K original miles on the body and
it's a convertible, what more could you want? Oh wait, I know...our
consignor is including a new full weatherstripping kit to keep you
leak free and whisper quiet in the cockpit.
Exterior
A respray in Mist Blue takes over for the once British Green body
and shows very nicely with no checks or heavy inclusions, just
smooth deep blue paint and some very light cracking in a few areas
of the fender flares that one must lookhard to spot. The sculpted
body is highlighted on the front quarters by shark-like gill
venting with some chrome accenting and the slightly larger than
stock flares added to the front quarter panels. Up front a custom
header panel leads the way with sunken and exposed dual headlights
with a horizontal barred chrome grille within a large cutout just
below. Leading back to the heavily raked stainless dressed
windshield is a turbo style reverse scooped and louvered hood for
some extra pizazz. A black rocker cover with a strip of stainless
accenting above is reserved for the rockers. On the back, flared
extra curvaceous rear quarters, think40's pin up girl curves, frame
the deep dish 15-inch polished aluminum slot wheels that are
wrapped in staggered width raised white letterBF Goodrich TA
radials from 2020. The rear has a split chromed bumper, half round
cut outs in the rear valance for the tail pipes, and 4 round
pristine tail lights. Note the new black cloth Stayfast convertible
top and frame in fine shape with a clear plastic rear window
covering the passenger compartment. The look and stance of this
year is quickly becoming one of my favs, along with the rounded
look of the 76-77 versions.
Interior
All black vinyl in this 1968 model year covers the buckets, door
panels, and dash. This creates a beautiful combination to the
exterior blue. No fading and very slight wear is seen on the vinyl
drivers chair, however overall it presents in very good condition.
The center console is wrapped in black and uses aluminum
highlighting as well as some black and a large chrome shift knob to
set everything off. Also, a black aftermarket wrapped steering
wheel adds a nice touch to the overall interior. Carpeting
throughout appears as like new in black. Nice deep inset gauges for
the driver as well as the cluster of 5 supporting gauges in the
center keep you up to date of the car's vitals. We note the factory
AM/FM radio in at the bottom of the center dash with a five-some of
round gauges above and the exterior lighting fiber optic display
below.
Drivetrain
A non-original circa 1974 350ci V8 mill is backed by a rebuilt
4-speed Muncie manual transmission circa 1967 with a new clutch
residing in an overall clean but patinaed engine bay. Chrome is on
for the dress up of the valve covers and air cleaner assembly and
feeding this mill the proper mixture of air and fossils is a new
Holley 4-barrel carburetor mounted atop a Weiand aluminum intake.
The rear axle weighs in at 3.70 and Positraction with an AO
stamping code cluing us in to the fact this 'Vette may have been
born a 327ci 350hp car. Our consignor notes that a new radiator and
heater core were recently installed.
Undercarriage
A gander underside reveals newly redone 4-wheel disc brakes with
stainless lines and new pads, rotors, and calipers. A good
condition but patinaed frame and floor construction as well as a
clean suspension is also here to greet us. Suspension is fully
independent for the front and rear with the front being coil spring
and the rear being a frame anchored differential with transverse
leaf springs. Dual exhaust with headers and stock style mufflers is
nice, clean and carries only surface rust on some of the piping. As
an extra bonus our consignor has installed a new fuel tank to keep
things running well.
Drive-Ability
I liken this test drive to driving a piece of fine art sculpture,
and it performed as it should for the drivetrain. Endless power
from the 350 cuber, bias free braking and great handling all
wrapped up in a fun in the sun fully functional package.
Just a very nice looking, slightly custom, well sorted 1st year C-3
Stingray that runs and sounds better than it did in '68. If you are
in the market for a well-equipped early Corvette that's ready to
cruise, do not hesitate on this one...When the shark bites....!
