Vehicle Description
1984 Chevrolet Corvette
For the introduction of the new first year version C4 Corvette
Chevrolet went Star Wars on the TV ads proclaiming. "You've never
seen anything like this before, you've never heard anything like
this before", utilizing plenty of smoke, flashy lighting and even
vertical light sabers. Looking back it now seems very dated, but at
the time it was perfect to get buyers through the showroom
doors.
Up for consignment, a car from 1984 that needs some TLC. It has
most of its original mechanicals, interior and exterior, still
looks good but some extra care to get her back to snuff will be
needed for this intro year C4 year war ship. (Corvette..look up the
definition.)
Exterior
A red coupe, all fiberglass, and all parts are there. No chrome
now, just neoprene for the bumpers, hidden headlights and a black
wrap around trimming. Some shark gills for the front quarters, a
black removable smoked glass top and rear greenhouse glass. Black
window surrounds, factory tinted glass, and black door handles
bring the red package together nicely. In back, the round dual tail
lights are set within a vertical, rear roll pan. Turbine style
wheels are wrapped in good condition rubber all around. The
condition overall is good with some cracking and chip off of a
respray of Bright Red seen on various seams and the neoprene
bumpers.
Interior
Black leather buckets, showing slight areas of wear near seams,
look overall well preserved and right out of the mid 1980's. Square
and rectangle design abound all in black. The dash is original and
has some backlit digital gauges behind the plastic panels. The
original steering wheel fronts the dash and in the center is a
lineup on top of vents, then down to a litany of toggles which
control the display of warning lights in a small frosted glass
panel in the center. Definitely shades of early digital technology,
which are more bell, whistles, and LCD lights than actual digital,
but one needs to start somewhere. Next in line is a digital
aftermarket radio which its a CD/AM/FM MP3 iPlug-in style. Then the
climate controls sliders, and down to the console which has the
shift lever, window toggles and mirror adjustment toggles along
with some storage. In back under the greenhouse glass is a carpeted
storage area in black showing slightly faded but remaining very
clean. We note the presence of red seat belts and some flaking of
the paint on the door and side panels with red showing through,
alluding to the original interior color.
Drivetrain
A 5.7 Liter V8 with the Crossfire EFI being replaced by an
Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor resides under the clamshell hood. A
700R4 4-speed automatic w overdrive sits in an unrestored and
original engine bay. A 2.73 limited slip rear axle is on to turn
the back tires.
Undercarriage
All original appearing with nothing unremarkable underneath. Strong
frame construction with very little surface rust, and plenty of
cast aluminum parts. Dual exhaust and C4 curve carving suspension.
4 wheel power disc brakes are all over this car.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and smooth idler it ran and handled well with bias
free panic stop braking. Unfortunately here's where some TLC will
come in.. .The wipers, horn, tachometer in the gauge cluster
display, power locks, power mirrors, AC, and cruise control are all
in-operable. Also the steering column has some slop in the tilt
mechanism.
A first year C4 that is in need of a good home and interior
function TLC. Every car at Classic Auto Mall has a place to go, and
is this yours? All in first year C4 style...come on in and get
it!
