Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1971 BMW 2800CS E9 Coupe.
This is a two-owner example with known history and service records
dating to new. Originally polaris silver, the original owner was
unhappy with some finish issues that arose in the first year of his
ownership and he convinced the BMW dealer to repaint the entire car
for him in 1972. He opted for a color change to anthracite grey
metallic. The finish has held up remarkably well and retains a nice
shine, but there is some crazing in the clear coat on the hood,
roof and trunk lid. The body is straight with excellent door
fitment and panel gaps. Nice original bumpers, trim, glass and
correct coupe wheels. There has been some rust repair in the floors
that's not to a concours standard, but is structurally sound.
Overall this coupe presents to a nice driver standard.
After languishing for years in the corner of a shop when the
original owner lost interest in driving it, the present enthusiast
owner acquired this E9 in 2017 and subsequently undertook a major
recommissioning with a partial interior refresh, five-speed
conversion and suspension overhaul. Interior is almost completely
original with excellent original carpets, door panels, headliner
and wood-rimmed steering wheel. Rare original pigskin seat
upholstery (not cow leather) has held up remarkably well. Original
dash has a few minor cracks. Presentable original wood. All gauges
are clear and working.
Under the hood is the original numbers-matching 2.8 liter inline
six mated to a Getrag five-speed manual transmission (this is an
early BMW Getrag with the mechanical speedo drive, so the original
speedometer works perfectly). Additional service under present
ownership has included Pertronix electronic ignition, new Weber
carburetors, new springs, Bilstein shocks and tie rod ends. The A/C
has also been serviced and is working. We've driven many E9s and
this is among the best we've experienced from a driving perspective
- it feels particularly well tuned. It runs great and is a joy to
drive.
Factory tools, original books and many service records are included
with the sale. The 2800CS and 3.0 CS E9 coupes have long been among
our favorites at Motorcar Studio and this is a very well sorted
driver that would be welcomed by any BMW enthusiast. For more
