Intro
This is a 1981 Alpina B6 2.8 based on the original BMW e21 3-series with approximately 141k miles. It is model number 294 of 533 total built and owned by the seller for about 30 years. This Alpina was restored approximately 18 years ago (about 30,000 miles ago) in original color, with a few changes. The engine was bored and stroked to 3.2 liters increasing output to 250 horsepower. Front brakes were upgraded to Wilwood, and the original Alpina Momo Sport steering wheel leather was updated.
Exterior
This BMW Alpina has its original factory color of Sapphire Blue with Alpina badging. It has dual side mirrors and a manual crank operated sunroof. The recently powder coated 15-inch Alpina alloy-wheels are 7 inches wide at the front and rear and wrapped in 205/50 Dunlop Direzza tires. The body is in excellent condition.
Interior
The very clean interior is original Alpina with ASS seats upholstered in Alpina Fabric with Alpina logos in excellent condition. It has the Alpina Momo Sport steering wheel plus Alpina shift knob and the Alpina factory production number plate on the dash. All gauges work with no dead pixels and this Alpina includes a top-of-the-line period correct Alpine head unit with Altec Lansing speakers and period correct cocoa floor mats. The headliner and door cards are in excellent condition with no sagging or warping.
Mechanicals
This is a big block 2.8-liter Alpina factory conversion with 141k miles. It has been bored and stroked to 3.2 liters by Henry Lawrence of Power Plant, a BMW specialty shop devoted to building high performance BMW engines in Greensboro, NC. This Alpina is just short of 250 horsepower with roughly equal torque. The valve train, cam and heads are all original Alpina. To make it handle like a 200+ bhp car, Alpina fitted Bilstein spring units at front with gas-pressure shocks and shorter and stiffer springs from Ahle. At rear there are gas-pressure shocks from Bilstein as well. Alpina also installed an extended range gas tank.
Summary
This 1981 Alpina B6 is a very rare car that elevates the “Ultimate Driving Machine” to another level. It has been extremely well maintained by a collector and comes with service records and Alpina authentication. With just short of 250 horsepower, it is still a fast car by even today’s standards and according to the seller is very satisfying to drive. It has a clear title and is in Pennsylvania.
