This 1969 Corvette coupe represents the final year for Chevrolet’s fearsome 427ci 435hp L71 tri-power setup.  Its big block performance remains impressive nearly 55 years later, and with a 4-speed transmission it’s also great fun to drive.  Combine that with red/red colors over the sharp Stingray lines and you’ve got a very enticing C3.

This Corvette is definitely hard to miss.  It has seen a repaint in its Monza Red color which definitely has some pop.  There is a big-block hood with the proper trim and 427 badges.  It also has shiny, straight bumpers along with the new-for-1969 Stingray script on the fenders.  Other features include the optional fender vent trim and a luggage rack.  The 15 x 8” Rally wheels wear Firestone F70-15 redline tires which are a very nice accent on the car.  And being this is a 1969 coupe you can remove the T-tops and rear window at any time for open-air motoring.

While this Corvette has a captivating look, the real highlight is under the hood where the 427ci 435hp engine lurks.  With three carburetors and a solid-lifter camshaft this was Chevrolet’s top-of-the-line street setup.  It boasted factory ratings of 435 hp and a massive 460 ft-lbs of torque and will easily cut the tires loose.  These engines do have an 11.0:1 compression ratio so you will want to run higher octane fuel.  But you will be rewarded the moment you turn the key and hear that terrific sound which only gets better as you run through the gears.  Note this car is also equipped with power steering and power 4-wheel disc brakes for easy driving.

This example shows a vehicle assembly date of early October 1968.  The engine block is the correct 3935439 part with a casting date of 6-14-68.  The block was decked during a previous rebuild and restamped with the correct VIN derivative, 9-9-68 assembly date, and LX suffix code.  The automatic transmission was replaced with a wide-ratio M20 4-speed which is great on the street (and more practical than the close-ratio M21).  The rear end is a 3.36 heavy duty Positraction unit dated 9-28-68.  This car also has the correct 6,500 rpm tach redline, transistor ignition, single fuel line, halfshaft caps, and larger front and rear sway bars.  And of course, no sign of air conditioning.

The red vinyl interior is a great match for the exterior and offers a more exciting look than the usual black or tan.  It presents as original and as such is in better than average condition.  Optional features include power windows, a tilt / telescoping steering column, and an AM/FM radio.  The headlights and wipers all function properly through both the control switches and vacuum breakers.  All gauges and instruments work properly except for the clock and some of the fiber optic dots.  The horn, heater/defroster, vents, interior lights, courtesy lights, and parking brake are all functional too.

The L71 Corvette represents the pinnacle of the late 1960’s horsepower wars.  It didn’t get any better, and just six years later the big-block was gone completely and the base Corvette could only muster 165hp.  This car, with its great colors and potent engine, harkens back to a better time and does the Corvette name proud.
