hard to put a finger on what endears us to old pick-up trucks.
Perhaps it was not that long ago these were reasonable means of
transportation, so most enthusiasts have owned a few as parts
chasers. To quote Jimmy Buffet, Can I get an AMEN for a $100
pick-up! If you have owned a vintage truck you no doubt cruised
either with your best girl tucked up next you or better yet your
favorite dog in the same spot. If you worked on the farm often
lunch was served off a tailgate on warm Autumn day, or you enjoyed
a cold beer after a long day of work on that same tailgate. While
many have memories of cruising the local downtown in their cars,
farm kids and children of a parent in trades learned to drive on
dusty back forties or on jobsites while helping your parents with
the family business. These memories certainly are the inspiration
for many a country song for sure. Featured here is a wonderfully
restored 1946 Chevrolet 3100 that is primed and ready to help you
and your family build your own set of memories around. The older
restoration (completed in 2005) has held up well painted in a
vintage yellow and black color combination. It was treated to a
hobbyist paint job which presents well with a nice luster but there
are a few runs in the paint along with some wear and tear chips
from the last 20 years of light use. Most of the chrome and
stainless trim is original and has some light patina and mild
pitting, however the front and rear bumpers are new chrome units.
The tailgate is an aftermarket unit, and the fenders are fiberglass
replacements. The bed features new stainless-steel retainers with
well restored oak flooring. The rubber seal surrounding the
windshield is showing some dry rot, however a new piece is included
in the sale. The running boards have been modified with heavy tread
plates welded in place, while not stock, they add a nice vintage
farm feel to the build. This antique agricultural feel is further
supported by the use of 6-ply tires out back and 4-ply tires up
front. Inside the cab, this truck features fresh upholstery,
including the seat and headliner and new vinyl floor covering. The
metal surfaces were refinished during the restoration process and
otherwise the fixtures such as the steering wheel, stainless trim
and dash cluster are all original, all functional but showing some
typical wear. The truck was converted to 12 volts and the gauges
were modified to accommodate the upgrade and work well with the
exception of the fuel tank reads inaccurate under a 1/2 tank. The
heater has not been upgraded and will require further modification
to get it to work with the 12 volt system. A well-executed set of
courtesy/map lights has been added to add some interior lighting in
the cab along with a cigarette lighter to provide auxiliary power
for your GPS or other related electronics. Under the hood the
original 216cid engine was upgraded to a 235 inline 6 cylinder from
a 1959 Chevrolet Pick-up. The upgrade to this motor provides
naturally more power and is a little more user friendly for hobby
use. An electric fan set up was installed in front of the radiator
behind the trademark waterfall grille. This keeps the under hood
compartment looking stock to the untrained eye, and the electric
fan also helps keep the old motor running cool for use on parade
routes or in heavy traffic. The engine compartment is nicely
detailed and shows very well. The original 3-speed transmission was
rebuilt and transfers the power back to the stock rear
differential. Underneath the chassis was part of a frame off
restoration. The frame is solid with no rust through as are the cab
floorboards. The complete suspension was restored/replaced during
the restoration. The h
